Our Commitments

I'm beautiful to look at
And wonderful to hold,
But please don't adopt me
If you wont keep me 'til I'm old.

Good things come to those who wait.
The saying really is true.
Just give me a chance to be a good dog,
And I'll never stop loving you.

THESE BEAUTIFUL DOGS ARE NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION...BUT, WE HOPE, SOME OF THEM MAY BE SOON!

These dogs' stories are examples of our commitment to rescue.  It illustrates how we fight for each and every dog we get in, and how it is often a road filled with obstacles, both emotional and monetary.  Some of these beautiful dogs will be available for adoption after some love and rehabilitation.  We've taken in dogs and given over two years of care in some cases before allowing them to be adopted...click here for shining examples of why we "bother" to help the helpless dogs.Despite not being available for adoption, these loving dogs still deserve a good life and MAGSR is committed to giving it to them.  In all cases, they were either neglected and abandoned and often times seriously abused, or just given up on, all of which has caused considerable emotional and sometimes physical trauma.  With the help of caring trainers, and probably more importantly loving and patient fosters, we have been able to rehabilitate many dogs in similar conditions.  With the help of generous sponsors, dedicated fosters, and lifesaving financial grants, MAGSR has been fortunate enough to care for even the most desperate of dogs.

Laurell K. Hamilton is the author of two New York Times Best Seller series which mix mystery, fantasy, magic, horror and romance. There are now more than six million copies of Laurell’s first series in print worldwide and her second series is on its way to the top! Ms. Hamilton lives in St. Louis County, Missouri with her husband, daughter, two pug and two part pug dogs.

Laurell and her assistant Darla have generously donated to help Delia, and have previously helped another MAGSR dog, Saydee. Delia sends big wet sloppy kisses to Laurell and Darla for helping her! They are two of her Angels on Earth!

It is with the generosity of such kind and bighearted people that together we are able to help so many abused, neglected and voiceless dogs. Laurell also promotes spay and neutering, and showcases adoptable dogs on her website. MAGSR is listed as one of her charities.

DESCRIPTION: You might have seen Delia before. Delia was the lead story a short while ago on the local news.  The news team was doing a story in the neighborhood and someone called their attention to her.  It was a particularly hot day for spring,  over 82 degrees and when the news team arrived on the scene, they were understandably horrified.  This once beautiful Black German Shepherd dog was almost unrecognizable.   She was in an unshaded backyard and had mange, open oozing sores over at least 75% of her body and was lying in filth with flies buzzing over her head.  One eye was totally closed and covered with sores.  There was no sign of water or shelter anywhere.  When she got up, a huge mammary tumor was visible hanging from her underside.  Her owner was ordered to give her up to the  Animal Control officers who subsequently notified MAGSR.  We welcomed her.
Delia is now at the vets recuperating.  She is doing very well and is an office favorite; enjoying all the attention and loving that she had been lacking so far in her life.  The staff all love her, she has doggy and kitty friends and she is loving life once again!   Her mange is being taken care of, the sores are almost gone; the vision in one of her eyes is still  questionable, but it does not affect the personality of this very valiant lady!  She is scheduled for her spay and tumor removal and she should move into her foster home as soon as the doctors give her the go-ahead! If you can help cover some of the medical expenses of Delia and our other medical issue dogs please click here. She is very, very appreciative of your help and gives you all friendly, sloppy, grateful kisses!

Update: Delia's face and hind end that were looking so horrible when I brought her in are healing very nicely. Delia still has a scar on the right side of her face but it is much smaller than previously. The doctor thinks that eventually her hair will grow back in all affected areas but she is not sure of pigmentation returning. Delia has become the office favorite, just about every day she is brought from her run to the reception area where she has her personal, bolstered bed. She is perfectly content to lay there and watch all the happenings in the office.

Delia can become very protective of her bed. Since she has been feeling better, she has developed a "personality" such as getting upset and throwing her water bucket around in her run if she feels she isn't getting enough attention. Delia was given a kuranda bed for her run, she refuses to get up on it but will sleep on a comforter.

The vet  spends a lot of time with Delia and even takes Delia for walks with her own two dogs every day. Delia is fine with the other dogs unless they try to get into her bed when they come back into the office. When I walk Delia, she just stays right by your side and looks up at you! Delia responds quickly if she sees a leash in your hand, she loves to go out for walks! Her coat, from all the grooming, bathing and brushing is looking beautiful, and feels so soft. This poor girl seems to desperately need to be loved.

Update: I visited HRH Delia yesterday. She extended her paw to me and consented to a few pictures to show her improving condition. For a dog that had spent most of her life outdoors in a unshaded and filthy backyard, Delia has come a long way. Her face is starting to show new hair growth and her other bald spots are gradually filling in and her sores are healing. Delia is living large as the resident Diva at the veterinary hospital where she has been staying. She is a definite favorite with the doctors and the staff....she lies on her padded, comfy, bolstered bed and watches the comings and goings around her all day. She is very protective of this wonderful bed and will let any animal that so much as gives it a sniff a stern warning to back off! :) She is definitely what you would call a lady of leisure....I guess because of her past, this is very understandable and she shows no sign of being a hyper-active dog at all! :) Life is good with a soft bed, air conditioning in the heat, good food and great company -- and regular walks! Sigh -- can't ask for much more, other than a permanent home to lounge around in, now can she?

Update: When Delia (Dee) first came to stay with us she had undergone yet another change in her life; she was very sad and just wanted to be left alone thank you. It took about a week and then slowly the very special girl that she is started to shine through. Dee is still shy when new people visit but she is a bundle of spunk and love when things are quiet. She no longer has the use of her back legs, they were stolen from her by her cruel disease, but she does not allow that to stop her. She slides her back end behind her as she determinedly pulls herself where ever she wants to go and please don't even think of getting in her way. Up and down hall way, out the door and on to the deck and, when she is feeling really adventurous, down the ramp and across the yard. We are working on getting her used to her wheelchair but she prefers her way much better.

Dee lives with two other German Shepherds and a Lab and insists on being in on anything they are doing. If the others sounds an "intruder alert" Dee is right there to add her voice to the warning. When I come home in the evening she is waiting side by side with the others, greeting me with kisses and at bedtime is the first one into the bedroom to stretch and snuggle in her big soft bed.

When Gracie, a newest foster, came to stay, Dee was the first one to introduce herself and informed the new girl just how things were run in "her" house. Gracie and her foster brother Shep love to chase small critters and deer (thank goodness for a fenced yard). Dee gets so excited and insists on joining in so with her front end leading the way and her back end supported by a sling and me, off we go. Dee is a big girl whose exercise in this manner is limited so, about half way thru the yard, her front end (and I) run out of steam and we both have to stop, rest and pant. It is hysterical as never, in my wildest dreams, would I have ever imagined I would be holding up the rear end of a dog and chasing deer. No, I might not have ever thought I would be doing this, but one look at the expression of joy and excitement on her face and I know we will be chasing deer this way for as long as it still bring her happiness.

DESCRIPTION: Kodiak is a big, friendly boy! He is described as being good with everything -- adults, children and other animals. He is a big boy and still needs some weight on his frame -- and he promises to be gorgeous! He has a sweet face with a funky ear and he looks like a good old boy that just wants some family to have good times with. He would love to be your best friend -- y'know, share the couch and play some ball, have a few snacks and pal around!

Update: Kodiak has been working with a trainer and is doing great! We have discovered he will need hip replacement surgery. We are hoping to get him into a foster home soon so we can get his hips fixed. He will need an experienced dog handler and is developing into a great dog!

Update: Kodiak has had his surgery! Check out his blog to keep updated!

Update: Kodiak is still healing from his surgery and is not currently available for adoption. We'll keep you updated!

Heart dog: Melba has special needs.  For details please email us here.  We have created a "Training Fund" in an effort to help some of our dogs who are in particular need.
M
elba is one such dog.  Click here to learn more.

DESCRIPTION: Melba is smaller than she appears in her pictures.  She's a VERY affectionate girl who loves attention and likes cuddling up in your lap if you let her.  She was scared to get in and out of the car by herself today but once in she just lay down next to the person sitting by her and went to sleep.  She has a great time playing with Frodo once we got to the kennel finally too so would do well with another playful, but fairly gentle dog to play with.  She should not live in a house with cats or other small furry creatures however.  She can get pretty focused on other dogs playing and will start barking at them to get their attention so that they will invite her to play too but is otherwise quiet and friendly with anyone who wants to meet her.  She's a sweetheart who will fit in just about any new home!

Update: Melba was adopted and went to some training sessions with her new owners.  They did their best but found that Melba really just needs to be in a home with a family that will be sure to take the alpha positive with her. She needs obedience to learn the rules and a strong leader to keep her in line.  Melba is a sweet girl but she still needs rules and boundaries.  She is now attending obedience classes with a volunteer to try and rehabilitate her.

Update: Melba is one of our most "special dogs". She is very special to a lot of us! In fact, it is pretty common knowledge that she has more fans in the rescue than the average movie star! She has a very distinctive personality to say the least! Melba is the rescues resident Diva and she knows it and she plays it to the hilt. She is a dynamo in a fur coat -- a playful puffball with an attitude. Melba requires strong handling and she is presently undergoing a training program with some of our very dedicated volunteers to help her adjust to the real world! She came back to us with a few more quirks and fears then she had when she left us and we are now working hard to help her overcome all the things that make her less than the perfect little pet she should be. Melba is smart, cute as a button and will steal your heart in an instant. She is not quite ready yet, but hopefully we will have her ready for her forever home soon.

Update: Hi! It's me Melba the Diva Princess of MAGSR. Guess what? I am in a foster home now and I am doing very well. I am house and crate trained and I have been very well behaved per my foster Mom. I am living with 3 GSD's, a Husky and 3 kitty cats. I have a very special friend that I made instantly, he is a submissive male GSD/Chow mix. We get along just great. I play a little rough but I am learning. I am making progress with my other fur companions as well. I am training everyday and doing well. I will be ready for adoption in no time. Please keep me in mind.

Raven

EClick here for more pictures

DESCRIPTION:  Hello!  It's me, Raven again.   I am back with my old MAGSR buddies here at the kennel -- well, most all of them are new buddies now.  My Mom got sick and could not care for me like she did at first, so she returned me because she loves me and wants me to have a home where I will be walked and exercised and loved --  just like she did before she got sick.  I am a very lovely "mature" German Shepherd lady.  I have been called "sweet". :)  I do have my moments!  I love people.  I love to be in a home.  I love walks every day and I love to go for a ride in a car.  Other dogs, well -- let's just say that I consider most of them pretty inferior and I prefer to have my people all to myself -- and no kitties, puhleese!  They are just -- so --  well, not doggy at all! I am great in a home.  I will wait until you get home if you work -- then we can walk, and you can tell me all about your day.  And, I do listen very, very well.  I will tell you whenever anyone comes to the door...and make sure that I give them a good sniff when you let them in -- and if you say they are ok, I will wag my tail and accept them.  I am a nice, "mature" lady - just waiting for another chance....Won't you give me one?  My name is Raven, and I am very anxious to meet you.

Update: Raven misses having a soft bed to lay on and someone to scratch her head. She is a low energy snuggle bunny who adores treats and just hanging out! She prefers slow walks and regular meals. She is a favorite at the kennel and loves greeting the volunteers every weekend. She's a treat you can't miss!

Update: Raven was returned as her person could no longer provide for her. However, now she resides in a foster home with several shepherds and she's become a member of the "pack". She is doing great with her pack and is learning new things from them all the time. She fell into the routine from the start and to date, has been the easiest foster we've had. Raven is not a terribly demanding older girl and her life has been full of turmoil and change, both of which are obviously very difficult on dogs. But don't let her age fool you. She has a spunky side that we now see daily. She's starting to play with a ball and loves to play with two of our female GSDs. These two behaviors appear to be new to her life, or at least were not permitted prior to now, which in itself is a crime given her age. But don't believe the old wive's tale regarding learning new tricks. In addition to her newfound freedom of being the dog we all wanted for her to become, Raven loves having soft doggie beds to lay upon, going for car rides, getting lots of loving kisses and taking walks with her pack members, both human and canine. Through all of these things, Raven, as well as all dogs, need structure and rules set for them. They need to know what is expected of them, what they are allowed and not allowed to do. This structure helps the dog understand where he/she fits in the pack hierarchy. This element is absolutely critical for a well functioning pack. This pack could be one human and one dog or could be several of each. With all of this being said, despite Raven's advanced age, she has the same needs as a dog much younger than herself. Only difference being that she has some gray hair and doesn't run around quite as fast. She is also housebroken, has had no accidents at all and is quite fond of her crate. Very often, you can find her lounging in there on her own accord.

She would fit in well with several households. She does not need to have other dogs around to be fulfilled. But in the right hands, she could fit in well with a very select family that has another large breed dog(s). But that family will need to understand the challenges a multi-dog household presents. No matter who you choose, please consider the dogs' needs in addition to your own. This makes for a much better and happier fit for all involved.
