MAGSR.ORG - Providing
Adoption And Rescue Services For German Shepherd Dogs In Maryland
The following listings show LOCAL
available GSD or GSD mixes that are being surrendered by their owners
or placed by their fosters.
This page is NOT
for the 'selling' of dogs.
If you have
inquired about any dog listed on this page and been asked for an
"adoption fee" of any kind,
that is not clearly stated in the listing, please contact us immediately at
web@magsr.org and let us know. As a dog rescue
organization, we advocate rescue adoptions only. In Addition, and
for the same reasons, we require that all dogs listed on this page be
spayed/neutered as a condition of their adoption.
These dogs are not part of the MAGSR program;
we have not evaluated any of these dogs. We list
them here because they are special and deserve a second look - - and
a second chance. For more information on any of these dogs, please
contact the listed party, not MAGSR.
If you'd like to have your dog posted here, please follow the instructiuons at this link.
Donations are appreciated!

TO DONATE TO MAGSR
If you are placing
your dog in a new home please make sure the home he/she may go to is
safe, loving, and dedicated. If contacted by anyone stating they
are with any type of K9 department please contact your local police
department K9 unit and inquire as to the reputation of that
person/group/organization. Not all people using rank titles are indeed with a legitimate K9 unit and you could be placing your dog at
risk.
I'm beautiful to
look at
And wonderful to hold,
But please don't adopt me
If you wont keep me 'til I'm old.
Good things come to those who wait.
The saying really is true.
Just give me a chance to be a good dog,
And I'll never stop loving you.
Adopting a dog is a
lifetime
commitment. If you aren't prepared to work with your dog through
the adjustment period and beyond, please look no further. If you
wont keep your dog if you move or as your family grows, please look
no further. If you aren't prepared to nurse your dog back to health
if he gets ill or if she needs surgery, please look no further.
Rescue dogs have been through so much - dumped in shelters or found
roaming the streets. They have been abandoned, neglected, starved
and possibly physically abused. They need TIME, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING
and LOVE in order to succeed in their new homes. Sometimes it
may take several months for a rescue dog to make the adjustment to your
home and family. If you aren't 100% committed to making
this work with your new dog, then please don't adopt. Any adopter
of a rescue dog who has been through the adjustment period can tell you
its worth it. No dog is perfect….just like no human is perfect.
Please don't expect too much too soon from your new dog.
This page is NOT
for the 'selling' of dogs.
If you have
inquired about any dog listed on this page and been asked for an
"adoption fee" of any kind,
please contact us immediately at
web@magsr.org and let us know. As a dog rescue
organization, we advocate rescue adoptions only.

Description:Athena is a sweet girl. She needs an experienced German Shepherd owner. She needs a confident leader. She a good girl, and would be best in a home where she is the only child, only dog I should say. She has low self esteem, and can be shy. Basically she has weak nerves. She came from a place where she was bred from the time she could be, until I snatched her from her horrid backyard breeding machine lifestyle. I got her after she had her last litter of pups. This was in florida. I moved here, got her her shots, and have been trying to put some weight on her. Her previous owners did some damage to this little girl. She was terrified of leashes and collars, She would crouch down and freeze, as if she were awaiting a beating whenever she would see them. She also had never lived inside, had no inside manners and would freak out when left alone. She is very small and was never allowed to fully develop before she had the strain of mothering puppies.
She also does not need much correction, a firm "NO" and this little angel will give you a face like you broke her heart. She has come a very long way from when I first took her. Athena is very much an athelete. When I was in Florida, where it doesn't snow :) and it is very flat, we would bike ride together for about 7 miles, she would go running, go to the beach, the woods, the park, jogging, and on walks everywhere! She Loved going for bike rides and chasing a ball!
A calm but active house would be perfect for her. Someone such as a couple with no children that could give her all the attention she needs, or an older couple with lots of time to spend with her. Maybe a younger person who wants a running buddy. I would love to keep her myself, and have contemplated doing so. However, if I keep her, there won't be enough room for any other dogs that need rehabilitating. If I kept them all, I would be broke and have 50 dogs! I was going to put her in obedience school, but I cannot afford to do that with the foster dogs... doing obedience with your dog strengthens the bond between you and the dog, so it is a good thing to do together. I take her to the park and sometimes to a soccer field at night and let her off leash. She listens and will not run away, however she is not formally obedience trained. I have been working her in sit and down and she is learning quickly, but the adopter would have to pick up where left off. Also she would absolutely have to come back to me if you could not keep her! I put too much into this girl to have her go into another bad situation! Please send me an email if you are interested in her! I can send more pictures through email if you wish! Thanks!

Description: Brody completed basic obedience as a pup and knows sit, stay, down, leave it, high 5, high 10, speak, off and roll over. He may be a bit rusty, but he is the smartest dog I have ever known and actually loves to please, so practicing these commands with him is always a pleasure.
Brody will stick to his bed if it is available, but will sometimes try to sneak onto furniture when no one is home. He knows he is not allowed on furniture, however, and if we are concerned about a particular piece, we shut off that room or place objects on it that would make it uncomfortable for him to lie there.
Brody has never been allowed or encouraged to beg. We use the phrase “You’re not a beggar” and he will go find a spot to lie down, since he knows we do not accept that kind of annoying behavior. In fact, we recommend that you NOT feed him any people food at all, as it tends to make him vomit.
Brody is very smart, intuitive and affectionate. He is laid back indoors and more excitable outside, where he may try to chase small animals. Brody loves to go hiking, mountain biking and for walks or jogs. The more exercise he gets, the happier he is. Brody likes to be petted, especially under his chin and gently around his ears. He is very well-behaved at the vet, and has never even really growled at anyone other than our toddler. Brody will bark if he spots someone behaving strangely or sees a stranger on your property, but we usually appreciated this. In general, Brody likes other dogs, though he does assume the alpha position and puppies aren’t his favorite.
I adopted Brody from a shelter in Rhode Island in March of 2003. He was very high-strung then and required lots of exercise, but he learned very quickly and is nowadays almost ideal indoors and a blast outdoors. Brody was neutered at 5 months old and has never had any real health issues at all. He most recently went to Paradise Animal Hospital on Frederick Road for his check-ups, and though you may need some heartworm medication next month, I do not think that he is due for any shots in the near future (see medical records folder).
Brody has been a well loved and well cared for dog his entire life. It is very difficult to let him go, but since he has some difficulty dealing with small children, we feel that it is better for him and our family to place him in a different environment. Brody loves older kids and almost all people, so we trust that you will make a connection and be thrilled with your new friend.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns at any time. We want what is best for Brody, and we know that our insights can help make that happen. Thank you for helping Brody and our family.

Description:
Bullet is great dog who knows where he wants to go. Bullet can be at your side in a second on his recall. He would do fine in a home with small children, medium children and all children. HE ABSOLUTELY LOVES LOVES LOVES PEOPLE AND BEING PET!! He's up to date on shots, he's neutered and doesn't need a very big yard, he would rather hang out with you and go for walks.
This lovebug would do best in a home where he is an only dog and with a confident leader. He also doesn't need correction…a firm "No" and he gets it. A calm but Active house would be perfect for him.
He loves riding in the car, trips to the park for our daily walks and to petsmart to meet everyone he sees!! lol and since I am a certified pet dog trainer, Bullet is obedience trained. He loves to be brushed and his favorite spot to be petted is on his chest, and his ears. He'll stand there all day and let you pet him.

Cali is a wonderful dog who is very shy at first. She is wonderful with my small daughter and everyone that she meets. She has just proven to be too much for us to handle with our shift changes for our jobs. We would love for her to be adopted by a family with a large yard so she can run. She enjoys being off the leash and will come back when calles. She just craves attention and wants to please. She is a chewer but with lots of toys she is doing much better. She also seems to do better with another dog or someone that would be home with her a lot.

Description: Casey is a loving dog. She just needs to have a home with a family and a nice size yard, mine is too small. She does get a little jumpy when visitors come because she wants to be loved so much. I will request in writing if you cannot keep her that she comes back also that she is fixed. I will pay for half of the surgery. I will also want to see where she is living and will ask if I could do random checks . She is a good dog and I never want to see her hurt in any way. I just cannot take her. I am going to have to move and cannot find a place to take her because of the breed. Landlords are strange. So, if you are looking for a lover of a dog to fit in your family, she is it.

Description: ChaCha was rescued as an approximately 8 weeks puppy via Petfinder - she was sadly severely malnourished. She has lived with our family ever since. Unfortunately, she and our older rescue dog are not getting along, therefore, we need to find her a good home or move her to a good shelter immediately.
Cha Cha is a pretty, cinnamon colored mix that needs a good home. Friendly
and sweet-natured, she is housebroken, knows her basic commands and walks
nicely on a leash. She should be the only dog in the house, seems to be good
with older children and we do not know how she is with cats (although she
seems to pretty much ignore our neighbor’s cats) and she seems to be good in
the car (she has been on half a dozen 1 hour trips with us). Recent
immunizations - Vet records and Crate included - $85.00. Please call us at
410 243-9965.
While she should be the only dog in the home, she is good on walks with other dogs.

Description: Cheyenne is a sweet girl but does not make a great first impression, she is a little reserved at first and mouthy. I got her from a lady who called herself a breeder but when she couldn’t find Cheyenne a home she was going to put her down but I came that morning and had to take her. But now money is not so good and my baby needs a new home. I love her and don’t want to give her up but I have to. She is not so good with guys. We don’t know why, she has never been hurt by a guy or anything but she is a females dog and I treat her like a baby so. The only problem we have had with her is someone was walking around our house and we didn’t know and let her out and she bit him. He wasn’t hurt but still she did it and she hasn’t done anything since. If you would like to come meet her call or email me.

Description: Duke is a German Shepherd, who will be 9 years old in December. We adopted him from the animal shelter when he was 5 months old.
He is lovable, and a big baby who loves to have his back scratched, and loves affection. He loves to play with other dogs but, has a right hip problem. He fell down the basement steps when he was two yrs. old. The steps had no carpeting, so he is afraid of going down inside steps with no carpeting. Has no problem going down outside steps. If he is playing and turns his leg or hip a certain way he will cry. I give him an aspirin in cheese, or lunch meat every 4 hrs as needed, and he is back to normal in about 2 days. He loves to be outside winter and summer. Will sit outside for hours at a time, as long as he is sure you are inside.
He has lost my husband and mother who he was close to, and will now lose me, so he will need a lot of love.
I feed him Beneful Healthy Weight dry and either Beneful wet or Purina wet mixed in with dry. If I do not have wet food I put gravy over the dry. Occasionally table food. When I leave the house I give him treats and leave music on so he knows I will be back. He is a barker no one can come near the house without him barking. Strangers cannot just walk in. I usually have to hold his collar until he sniffs them, and I keep saying it's ok. I baby-sit a 7 month old baby, and he just goes up and snuffs her, and he was fine. If I tell him no, he does listen. He does not let anyone touch his food while he is eating, or his treats and toys while he is playing with them.
He is healthy, no heart or worm problem, or any medical problems. He is loyal and wants a lot of love. He also has a chip inserted and it registered with the American Kennel Club. If lost he can be tracked.
He has 2 lumps on his lower sides one on each side the fat has confirmed thru x-rays, and tests that they are fat deposits, and nothing more, so no threat what so ever to him.
I just want to say I love Duke, and it breaks my heart to have to give him up. I only want him to have a good and lovable home. Please do not put him to sleep.
If you have any questions please contact me.

Andy resides at Fishing Creek Kennel, owned and operated by the Humane Society of Calvert County. These are SWEET dogs that will be lovely additions to a family.

| Description: Lilly is a 3 year old
GSD that does not get along with the other dogs in the house. The dogs
have had to be separated, which is not good for any of them. Her owner
has health issues that do not allow Lilly to go on long walks like she
needs and due to these issues finds it necessary to locate a home for
Lilly that does not have other dogs or children.
Lilly is fearful of people she does not
know. However, once she lets someone in, she loves to be with that
person and is very willing to work for him/her. She is extremely neat
and easy to live with in the house. Lilly does have a health condition -
Pancreatic Insufficiency Syndrome - which is manageable with medication.
Her pancreatic insufficiency syndrome is manageable through a herbal
supplement that only costs around $28 per month.
There is another note that needs to be added.
There may be a problem with her eyes. She startles easily at times and
sometimes reacts if something new appears in her vision. In this, I mean
if a branch appears in the yard that was not there the time before when
she was out, she will bar at it until she gets close enough to see what it
is. She will also be cautious if you use a different voice (i.e. baby talk,
change your voice, etc.) until she realized you are playing and that it is
you. She also doesn't like vacuums or lawn mowers. She tries to grab them.
She is a great dog that loves to play frisbee
and go for walks. She also likes to act like a teenager and "talk back" at
times when you try to get her to do something that she doesn't want to do. It
almost sounds like "woo, woo". She also likes to play keep away with the
balls. At least until she gets bored. She loves to sleep on cushions and
will frequently sneak onto the couch when we are not looking. She also likes
to hide her toys under the couch, shelves or anything low to the ground so
that you have to dig them out to keep her from crawling under them. Sometimes
she even watches tv. She used to drag dishes out of the sink and take them
down the hallway. And she thinks the bathtub is a great thing to jump in on
occasion as long as there is no water in it. She also will not take a bath
unless you get in the tub with her and hold on.

Description: Nina is an extremely loving, intellegent girl filled with warmth and caring, looking for a forever home. Due to the economy of late, her current owner is in a situation where the living arrangement will not allow dogs on premises. She is a great walker who will lead you by the hand to let you know when she ready to travel. She would love a great big yard with room to roam and loads of kids to play with.
Nina says: Chasing a ball and bringing it back to my person are ways to help burn off energy, but I also love to be a love bug and curl up next to your feet for lots of rubs and petting. I am housebroken and well trained so learning the ropes in a new place should not be a problem. I may need some work to learn new boundaries with cats and small dogs, but i was raised with a beagle who was my best buddy until he went to his new forever home. I REALLY hope I'm next because I have a great personality and a lot of love in my heart to give, all I need is somewhere to give it. Hope to hear from you soon and thanks for taking the time to read about me.
Adopting Nina will require a home visit and references. She will be adopted to MD, PA, VA and WVA only due to the home visit requirement.
Nina.
ps. forgot to mention that doggy treats really are enjoyable and great motivation for learning new stuff.

Description: Can you help me find my furever family, PLEASE. I need an experienced handler because I will take leader of the pack if I get the chance. I am very smart and love to learn new things. I am very attentive and versitile, and I need constant direction. I love to go for long walks, jogs, hiking, whatever keeps me focused. I walk perfect on a leash, and I know sit, down, stay (but not for long). I am crate trained and go potty where i'm supposed too. Also I can scale a 4 ft fence with ease, so it would be greatly appreciated if you had a fence that will keep me safe and inside a yard please. I am a puppy @ heart in a medium size dog. Are you the family for me? Lets meet I know you'll be impressed.
Update: Sauce is being returned to his foster family because the adopters did not have the time to devote to this high drive playful pup. Sauce loves to be outside and can run all day. He needs an active family who can direct his energy in a positive direction. He still has puppy tendencies. He will chew things that he's not supposed to, he will jump on your furniture, and he will jump a 4 ft fence with ease. He is housetrained, and crate trained, walks well on a leash. And is just the most lovable dog a family could want. If you are the family for Sauce please email jam35bones@yahoo.com.

Description: I have a german shepard dog that is in need of a good home, because we are moving. He is an older dog DOB 11/13/01. He is house broken, but he mostly stays outside, because he needs a lot of room to run. He is not good with other dogs. He has been good with my children, and I do not think he would hurt a child, but I would never leave him alone with a small child unsupervised. He is very large (125 lbs). And as I said in the post he needs a special kind of owner. He will bite someone he doesn't know, if not introduced properly. He is very weary with strangers. He was my fathers dog who has passed away, and we are trying to find the right home for him. We do not want him to go somewhere and then when the family decides they cannot handle him just to be sent somewhere else. Nor do I want him going somewhere where he will be chained up and ignored. I also do not want him hurting anyone or anyone hurting him. He really needs someone with a firm hand and time to spend with him so that a good bond can be formed. He is due a rabies shot, which we are going to try to get before we send him to his new home.
He is purebred A KC we never had him registered but we have the registration papers for him, they just need to be filled out and sent in. We also have his pedigree and copies of his parents papers. And he really doesn't like to ride in the cars. Please email me back as to how you could help me place our dog in a place where he will have proper care.

Description:
Thelma is a pure bred German Shepherd who is about 4 years old. She was brought back from North Carolina from my boyfriend's brother's home of which he could no longer keep due to moving and a break-up.
Thelma is a K-9 drop out due to being too nice and was picked up at a shelter in Tennessee. She had been living in South Carolina where she was neglected, was not given proper daily exercise, or even fed with a daily schedule. In the last few months the owner had adopted a small black cat and she must have had a damaging experience because she does not like cats or small cat-like dogs. The owner did have a young potential step-daughter and I was told that Thelma did well with her as well as other medium - larger dogs. Thelma is a very loving and well behaved dog who loves being around people.
I do not have a lot of information on Thelma because she has only been in my home for about a month. I can not keep her because I have three other dogs myself, one of which is a small dog, and I live in a Townhouse where I'm only allowed 2 4-legged animals. I would love to find a new loving forever home for Thelma with a family that will give her lots of attention and exercise that she deserves. I have a crate, her raised bowl set, and some food that will come along with her.
Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a meet and greet with Thelma.

Description:
Tia is a 7 year old German Shepherd. She has had a rough life. For 5 years she was physically and mentally abused by drunks. and for the past 2 years she has lived with a girl that only table fed her. When she came to us she was badly malnourished and wouldn't even touch dry dog food. We could rub her sides and only feel ribs. For the past 2 weeks we have taken care of her along with our 4 year old Chow. They get along very well. Her health and strength is restoring very well as well as her mentality. She has had a broken hip and has arthritis, so the previous owner told us. She gets around well though. She may be weary of stairs with the new owners as she was with us but I've worked with her and she is going up and down them by herself now. The reason I need to get rid of her is we can not afford her long term. She is not house trained, as the previous owner also stated. She needs to be let out about every 2-3 hours. We can't afford to give her the attention she needs any longer. Our other dog requires so much energy alone as well as our other pets. We just wanted to build her back up and she seems to be willing to accept love. The only thing you will need to work with her on is the house training. By no means will she be going to an abusive family. If I don't feel you are an acceptable candidate you will not receive her. This is not a show up, pick up. If interested please call 302-296-7176 (Amanda) or 302-228-0106 (Bill). or email the above link.
