Description
We adopted Beau in January and were told he was 4 years old. We hired a private trainer to work with him and she told us he is much younger than that, probably closer to 1-2 years old. This makes sense because he still acts like a puppy in many ways. He’s been through and graduated private obedience training and also has attended two months of group training classes. He’s a gentle (albeit clumsy) giant that loves other dogs. We have two shih tzus and a cat that he gets along with very well. He has a very sweet temperament. He’s a big lover-boy and loves to cuddle and is extremely loyal to his family. He's also incredibly smart. He learns tricks extremely fast and you can teach him complicated tricks, so he is a blast to work with. One of my favorites is he plays dead when you point your finger at him and say “Bang!”. He is crate trained and house trained and healthy with all shots up-to-date. He is also microchipped and neutered. He has a ton of energy so he is a great jogging partner. And after you exercise him or take him to the dog park, he's happy to just chill at home with you.
He's really a fantastic dog and it’s been a very difficult decision for us to make to rehome him. Here is why we're looking to rehome him:
We both work full-time and assumed we were getting a mature, adult dog, so taking on the training of a teenage puppy was a lot for us. Beau has come a long way since we first adopted him with all of the private lessons and group training, but he would do better in a home where people are around more. To complicate matters, when we adopted him we weren’t really expecting to start a family any time soon but flash forward a few months and I’m currently pregnant. He’s a good walker on the leash, but he barks and jumps when he sees other dogs sometimes because he wants to play. He’s a bit of a “frustrated greeter.” We take him to the dog park and he does great off leash with other dogs. But because we live in a townhouse without a yard we mainly give him exercise by walking/jogging him. Our neighborhood is full of dogs so it makes the walking difficult at times. I am small so am unable to control him when he pulls hard. Because I am pregnant I am afraid of getting tripped up on a long walk. He also has puppy traits in him which is great but means he has a lot of energy. We’re nervous that he might knock a small child over in his excitement and general enthusiasm for life. We think he would thrive better in a home with a yard and with a family with older children.
Because he is such a smart dog, he requires a good deal of stimulation. He can be stubborn, but once he realizes you’re the leader and trusts you, he will listen completely to you. He is extremely faithful. He is a good dog for somebody who has experience with dogs (ie not a first-time dog owner), especially someone who is familiar with either breed. With him we’ll send his crate, some toys and bones, some dog food to get you started (we feed him Costco’s Nature’s Domain food), his dog bowl, and blanket. We’re asking for a $150 rehoming fee and will want to do a vet reference check and home visit to make sure that the environment he is entering into would be a good fit for him.
