Homemade Frosty Paw Dog Treats - from Woody's Place Senior German Shepherd Sanctuary
Homemade Frosty Paw treats are super easy to make, and the ingredients are limited. Plus, we usually have them on hand, so it's no problem making them on the fly.
Ready for it??
Ingredients
-
1 - 32oz. of plain or vanilla yogurt
-
1 - jar of baby food
-
2 - tbsp. of peanut butter
Instructions
Mix all the ingredients together with a mixer, spoon, or even in a blender. Once the ingredients are mixed well, you can either spoon the mixture into your chosen container or put the mixture in a big food storage bag and snip off a bottom corner to pipe the mixture into the containers. If you use a blender, you can pour directly from the blender.
We use the food storage bag method and pour the mixture into our XL Dog Paw and Bone Silicone Molds, but you can keep it simple by using any small container, such as small store-bought plastic containers with lids.
After you've poured the mixture into the molds, cover it with plastic wrap and place it in the freezer until the mixture is frozen.
Once the mixture is frozen, pop out a homemade Frosty Paws treat and give it to your fur friend to enjoy.
From contributor, Jim Heintz:
Dear MAGSR,
I have been making dog treats for my 2 dogs for at least a couple of years now and they seem to absolutely love them. The first recipe, Chicken Treats, is definitely a favorite of the pups and our go to recipe. The second is also good and the Pumpkin is good fiber. And my dogs love peanut butter so treats with peanut butter are always good.
Chicken Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup nonfat dry milk powder
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 cup cooked and shredded chicken (from about 1 breast)
- ½ cup shredded carrots
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese, optional
- ¾ cup- 1 cup sodium-free chicken broth
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flours and powdered milk.
- Add beaten egg, chicken, carrots, parmesan cheese (if using), and ¾ cup chicken broth and mix together until just combined. The dough should be firm, but malleable. If it's too dry, add remaining ¼ cup chicken broth 1 Tbsp at a time.
- On a lightly floured surface, knead dough a few times. Roll dough out to a ¼-inch thick round. Cut out cookies using cookie cutter of any shape. In my case I usually place the rolled out dough on parchment paper cut to fit my baking pans and then use a pizza cutter to cut the size of treats I want.
- Place cookies on parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake for about 25-30 minutes, until treats are turning golden around edges.
- Let cookies rest in in pan for about 5 minutes before moving to wire racks to cool completely.
- Store chicken dog treats in airtight container in the fridge.
Notes:
- We put the treats, which I often make in double batches, in zip-loc bags in the freezer after cooling and just take handfuls out as we need them.
- I also have used other meats for a change from the chicken.
Pumpkin and Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Ingredients
-
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
-
2 large eggs
-
2/3 cup pureed pumpkin, either canned or fresh
-
3 tablespoons peanut butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
- Combine all ingredients in a stand mixer bowl. Mix on medium speed until the dough comes together.
- Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to 1/4" inch thick. Add a little water if the dough is very stiff, or a little flour if it is too soft and sticky.
- Use a cookie cutter to cut out desired shapes or a pizza cutter to cut strips of squares. Place on prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for about 15-20 minutes until the cookies are dry to the touch. You can bake them longer if you want them to be completely dry and hard, but I prefer them to be slightly soft and chewy.
- Let cool on wire rack before serving to doggies.
Ridiculously Easy Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/3 cup smooth peanut butter
- 1 cup hot water (NOT BOILING WATER)
- 1 egg, this is optional you do not have to include it.
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil or parchment paper and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl combine the whole wheat flour and the baking powder.
- Then, in the same mixing bowl add the milk, or hot water, and peanut butter
- Carefully mix the wet ingredients and the dry ingredients. If the dough is too dry add a little more milk or water, or if it is too wet add an additional tablespoon of flour until it is not too wet.
- Place dough on counter and roll it out with a rolling pin or flatten the dough out with your hands.
- Use dog bone cookie cutters and cut the dough into various size dog biscuits. Place cut out dog bones on cookie sheet. Leave space between the bones on the cookie sheet because they will spread slightly and rise. Or use a pizza cutter to make squares of treats.
- If the dough gets too sticky while you are cutting out the bones sprinkle it with flour and it will decrease the stickiness.
- Once all the dough is cut up bake the bones for twenty minutes at 375 degrees. The bones should be light brown when done.
