Gender: Female
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 9 years 11 months
Color: Black & Silver
Current Size: 57 lbs
Housebroken: Yes
Obedience Trained: No
Altered: No

Good With Kids: Unknown
Good With Cats: Unknown
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Lilly was on the run for sometime, but was finally caught and brought into a rescue.  Wanting Lilly to have the best chance at finding a home it was decided she would be better served by a GSD rescue.  Lilly is friendly, but a little unsettled, which is to be expected.  She is being given time to settle in, watch for updates.

Updates:

Lilly is setting into her foster home nicely.  She loves her doggy beds.  She lays in her doggy bed when she's not around her human, and at night when her humans go to bed - she lays in her doggy bed all night.  When her humans move, she pops up and comes over to say Hi and follows around the house.  Lilly loves to go outside for walks and is very easy to walk. She's very food motivated and loves when she gets treats. Lilly likes dogs of her own size and is somewhat shy around new people but will warm up with treats.  When she first came to her foster home, she did not want to get in vehicles, and whined, but by the third day, she jumped in the car and was excited to go for a ride. Lilly is looking for a fur-ever home.

DESCRIPTION:

One of the largest puppy mill busts found hundreds of German Shepherd's living in absolute filth and in horrendous condition.  Ankle deep mud and feces mixed with urine, no adequate shelter, lacking food and clean water is how these dogs were left to live, many for years.  The urgent call was made and MAGSR knew we had to take in as many as possible.  We now have 38 dogs that have a multitude of medical needs that we are addressing, and they need to learn to trust humans.  All dogs are scared, some are shut down, but our volunteers and vets will get them on their road to recovery.  It will be awhile before these dogs are ready for adoption, so please be patient and watch for updates.

An undertaking of this size for an all-volunteer rescue is quite a task, but one we are meeting it head on.  Many of the dogs require medical boarding so that they can receive the best possible care.  We are committed to providing everything they need, not only medically, but emotionally.  Our medical costs are going to be at an amount we have never seen before.  We need your help, the dogs need your help.  Please donate , your donation will go towards their ongoing care, medical needs, emotional needs and help them on their road to recovery and a brighter future.

Updates:

Ada is a sweet and very friendly dog and we are thrilled with her progress so far.  Now that she has been settling into a foster home, we are learning a lot more about her.  Walking Ada is enjoyable - she does not pull on the leash and self-corrects easily.  She is a superb jogger - matches the runner's pace and really enjoys being outside.  Ada has met several neighbors and is considered a charming star in the neighborhood.  Bikes, cars, trucks, and loud noises scare her a bit.  She has been enjoying living in the country and gets more confident every day.  Hikes in the woods are her favorite.  We have started training basic commands and she is getting fairly consistent with "come" especially when the person has a treat.  Ada is highly food motivated and appreciates positive praise.  She has no problems with getting any part of her body touched and is affectionate.  There is no observed food aggression - she eats readily out of a person's hand and has no issues with having her bowl touched; she takes treats gently.  Toys are an entirely new concept to her but toys that can be stuffed with food become quick favorites.  Crating Ada is easy; it seems to be her calm and safe space and she is visibly relaxed and quiet in her crate and gated area.  From there, she observes the activity in the house and learns.  Clear signs are given when she wants to go outside and we are well along the way for her to be housebroken.  Living inside is entirely new to Ada, and transition to a home environment requires small, incremental steps and patience.  The house is a bit overwhelming to her, and while she gets more comfortable every day, we are taking it slowly.  She handles being tethered in a room extremely well, but is anxious if given too much space. The road to freedom inside a house will understandably take time.  The resident dog has played a significant role in Ada's positive transition to the home environment and contributes continuously to her calmness on outdoor walks and when encountering new environmental stressors.  Ada will benefit greatly if her adopter has a calm and well behaved dog that she can watch and follow.  If interested in Ada, please ask to meet her.

Liesl

ADOPTED 02/23/2019!

Gender: Female
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 7 years 1 month
Color: black and tan
Current Size: 74 lbs
Housebroken: Yes
Obedience Trained: Partially

DESCRIPTION:

Liesl's family surrendered her as their busy lifestyle kept them from providing her with proper exercise and attention.  She lived in a home with 3 young children and did well with them.  Liesl will bark at other dogs when she is on a leash, but does well with them off leash.  This of course can be worked with through training.  Training, along with structure will go a long way in teaching Liesl good canine manners.  It also helps build a bond with her new family.  Liesl can be somewhat wary when meeting new people, this also can be addressed with training and socialization.

Updates:

Lottie is a gentle soul that has endured way more than any dog should have in her short life. She is a work in progress. She should remain on leash in and outside the home as she still skittish and is gaining confidence of new surroundings. She bonds very quickly and has shown some signs of separation anxiety. When Lottie is anxious or stressed she tends to jump up on her handler for reassurance. She will need a patient adopter that is willing to work through this with her. She isn't fond of a crate and requires some assistance and treats to go in. Lottie will require another dog in the home as she gets very anxious when she is completely alone and will whine and bark until her human returns. Lottie walks well on a leash and enjoys walks. We are diligently working on house breaking but aren't quite there yet although she does not soil her crate at night. She does sleep soundly in her crate for up to 9 hours as long as she is in the room with her human and doggie companions. She enjoys snuggling and is happiest snuggled in the lap of a human. Lastly, Lottie is extremely treat motivated, loves peanut butter and marrow bones. If interested in meeting Lottie, please contact us.

Approximate Age: 7 years 5 months
Color: Black
Current Size: 61 lbs

DESCRIPTION:

Blue was surrendered to us as his loving family fell on hard times and did not have the finances to continue to care for Blue.  He is very much loved by his previous family and they only want what's best for him.  Blue is having some allergy issues which has caused some fur loss and irradiated skin.   He is on medication to bring him some relief, we have changed his diet and he will be seen by our vet.  As you can imagine, Blue is quite confused with losing his family and home.  He lived with children ages 6 through 16.  We are giving Blue time to settle in and become accustom to his new surroundings and our volunteers.

Updates:

Blue is settling into his foster home even though it's only been a few days. He's walking better on a leash and really wants to play with or at least be near the resident GSD, who is still trying to figure out who his new house guest is. Blue likes to chew on his chew toys and is crating really well with no accidents in the house or the crate. Blue seems to know basic commands, but can sometimes be stubborn, but he's young and training should help with that. If Blue sounds like he'd fit well into your family, ask to meet him.

Blue continues to progress with his training. He's great in the crate and is still accident free in the house. Blue takes the "tough chew" label on toys as a personal challenge and wins every time! He loves his Nylabones and antlers. Blue is still leary of new people, but we're working on it. We'll continue with training and go to more public places to get him comfortable with new experiences.

Frieda came to us from a not so good situation.  She was used as a breeding dog, she was not provided with proper care or adequate living conditions.  Thankfully after complaints and an investigation she, along with other dogs were confiscated.  Frieda is now in our care where she is looking for a family that will provide her with a loving and warm home, where she means more to her family than just a puppy machine. Sweet Frieda needs someone who will love and care for her during her golden years.  Someone that will show her that not all humans are cruel.  She needs a place to rest her body and soul, to go for leisurely strolls, to lay in the sun and take in the day, to have a big comfy bed of her very own and to finally know true love.  Please give this beautiful senior girl the chance at a life she has never known, if it isn't for as long as a younger dog, she is just as deserving.

Rhee

Rhee adopted
RheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRheeRhee
Gender: Female
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 13 years 1 month
Color: Black & Tan
Current Size: 88 lbs
Housebroken: Yes
Obedience Trained: Yes
Altered: Yes

Good With Kids: Yes
Good With Cats: No
Other Dogs OK: Unknown
DESCRIPTION:

Rhee lost her family and home as her Military family were stationed overseas until 2022.  Rhee was staying with a family friend but unfortunately did not adjust well and was not getting along with the other dogs in the home.  Rhee will require time to adjust to yet another change in her life, a family with patience that will provide structure is best.  She lived with children since she was 11 months old with no issues.  She has been through professional obedience training, but a refresher course with her new family is required.

Updates:

Rhee is a wonderful girl.  She has settled into her foster home, is crate trained, and has excellent house manners. Rhee is currently a plus-size girl and loves to play, chew on toys, and go on walks. Rhee's leash manners need a little work, which a refresher course with a trainer will help to improve. Rhee loves everyone she meets and is patiently waiting for her forever home. Please ask to meet Rhee and be her fur-ever family.

Hello, my name is Rhee!  I’m living with a foster family and I consider myself a perfect guest.  I heard that I am the best foster they have ever had (I’m not their only foster).  I am housebroken, crate trained, and I know basic obedience.  I don’t counter-surf or get on the furniture.  I love to chew, but only on my toys.  I was put on a diet and exercise program and I have slimmed down.  I can walk a 5K at a brisk pace.  So, if your looking for an active, well-behaved walking companion who is slightly senior, please ask to meet me. See you soon!

Trooper

ADOPTED 02/09/2019!

Trooper
TrooperTrooperTrooperTrooperTrooperTrooperTrooperTrooperTrooperTrooper
Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 8 years 2 weeks
Color: Black & Tan
Current Size: 62 lbs
Housebroken: Unknown
Obedience Trained: No
Altered: No

Good With Kids: Unknown
Good With Cats: Unknown
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Trooper was picked up  as a stray by Animal Control.  Upon being found he had numerous abrasions and gashes on his legs.  He was seen by the vet immediately, had his wounds cleaned and sutured.  He is still healing from whatever caused his injuries, but is healing well. Trooper is need of a strong handler, someone that will set rules and provide structure.  Training is needed, as he needs to learn manners and good dog behavior.  Trooper can be spooked by things he is not familiar with so ongoing socialization is important.

Unfortunately, Trooper tested heartworm positive when seen by MAGSR's vet. This could have been avoided had he been kept on monthly heartworm preventatives. Trooper is in the beginning stages of his heartworm treatment, which of course MAGSR will pay for his entire treatment. Treatment is expensive, but Trooper is certainly worth the cost. Donations towards his treatment would be greatly appreciated, this would also help us save other dogs with medical needs. He will have to take it slow for the next few months while he undergoes treatment, so lots of rest will be in order.

Updates:

Trooper is one resilient and incredibly special guy. He was welcomed into the MAGSR family, as so many are, with very little information about where he came from or what he had been through. Although Trooper took a little time to adjust to a life of comfort, regular food, and stability, he seems to have discovered that things are improving every day. Trooper has already come a long way in the short time he has been with MAGSR. He has begun to learn basic commands such as sit, down, stay, and wait. His heel is coming along and only requires a few reminders that leaning in is better done when hanging out and not when walking on leash. As training is a requirement for all dogs, Trooper will be top of the class.

A perfect companion in the car, Trooper either lays down or quietly watches from his seat. He is good about getting into and out of the car. Having recently moved into a foster home, Trooper is now learning the ins and out of living in a home. Although cautious at first, Trooper seems to be taking this new set of changes in stride. He is learning about the joys of having his own bones, a comfortable place to sleep, and how to navigate slippery wood floors. Trooper is also developing an understanding of crate training and housebreaking. This is important as he will need to be on crate rest during his heart worm treatment. If Trooper sounds like a good match for your household, please inquire about him today.

Seth was abandoned by his person at a friends home and never returned for him.  He is understandably confused with the recent changes in his life causing some anxiety.  He lived with a female GSD and was around cats without issues.  He did live with children but did not have much interaction with them, so we do not know how he would do with children.  We are giving him time to settle in and will post updates once we know him better.

DESCRIPTION:

Atta was a stray to the shelter and is now looking for his forever home.  He is a strong boy with no leash skills, but with training, guidance and direction he will learn quickly.  He is young and full of energy, so be sure you are up to many walks and playtime each day.  Yes, he has a lot to learn, but will need his humans help to learn how to be the best he can be.

Updates:

He is a sweetheart!! Atta loves every person he meets. Atta hasn't had any accidents in the house and is slightly crate trained / crate comfortable. He would prefer being with his person than in the crate though and may cry a little at first. Once he gets a routine and understands you're coming back he's fine! Atta is a cuddler and a silly boy. He doesn't get into things around the house and is very well behaved. Training will be helpful and he learns very quickly! Sit, stay, come, heel, drop, etc are all about 65%. The dogs we have met, Atta hasn't been psyched about and will growl. Some he is okay with when introduced slowly and properly. He requires medium exercise and is happy to adapt to his owner. With car rides, he does well, gets slightly anxious, and may get car sick on longer trips. Atta may do well in a low-chaos home, maybe with a couple who is home often. He's a very special pup and his future family will be very lucky.

Rex is one of 22 dogs from the Carolinas that needed help due to Hurricane Florence.

Rex is handsome boy who is looking for someone to bond with.  A family that will take him to training, provide structure and guidance.  As he is new to us we are still learning more about him, watch for updates.

Updates:

Unfortunately, Rex tested heartworm positive when seen by MAGSR's vet. This could have been avoided had he been kept on monthly heartworm preventatives. Rex is in the beginning stages of his heartworm treatment, which of course MAGSR will pay for his entire treatment. Treatment is expensive, but Rex is certainly worth the cost. Donations towards his treatment would be greatly appreciated, this would also help us save other dogs with medical needs. He will have to take it slow for the next few months while he undergoes treatment, so lots of rest will be in order.

Rex is slowly settling in to his foster home. This sweet boy must have had a very hard past because he’s just so confused in a home. He enjoys watching out the window and taking naps with his foster mom. Poor Rex is so scared of the steps and of the kitchen, but his foster mom is working with him to help him gain some confidence with that. Rex does well going into his crate, which is good because he will require crate restriction during his heartworm treatment. Rex is affectionate and enjoys attention from his human – he just wants someone to love him. Rex is a quiet dog and needs a quiet and more calm home life so he can continue to build confidence and learn to trust humans again. If you’re willing to be patient and give Rex a chance, please ask to meet him today.

Hello, my name is Rex! I’m adjusting to my foster home. I’ve been through quite a lot since Hurricane Florence in North Carolina. My foster Mom thinks I’m real handsome and calls me Sir Rex Harrison sometimes. I love the attention I get from my foster parents and the resident dog. I’m relaxing and becoming myself. I was trained not to go into the kitchen and not allowed upstairs. A few times my foster Mom has taken me into the kitchen and upstairs but I’d rather not go there. My foster Mom realizes it’s not so bad. I like to wait at kitchen door and never get underfoot! I don’t get on furniture, no jumping up and I’m happy to retreat to my crate during the day for naps and to sleep at night. I like hanging out, going for walks and enjoy having treats for learning to sit. I was very excited when I first got here and had a problem with submissive peeing. I'm much better now, although due to heartworm treatment I’m on prednizone and really thirsty. My treatment is just starting. Thankfully, MAGSR is good to take care of the heartworm treatment for whomever adopts me. My foster parents are working to build up my confidence. In the meantime, I’m hoping for a forever home with gentle folks who can appreciate my good looks and charm.

Rex is doing great in his foster home. Rex has overcome his shyness and wants to play with the resident dog so badly, but is still on activity restriction until the end of his heartworm treatment so he's not allowed to run & jump yet. Rex walks well on the lead and doesn't pull and sits on command. Rex does well in the crate and is housebroken. He likes his neighbors and all of the dogs in the neighborhood. Rex is doing great but is still waiting for his fur-ever home - could that home be yours?

Mira came to us from a not so good situation.  She was part of a breeding facility, she was not provided with proper care or adequate living conditions.  Thankfully after complaints and an investigation she, along with other dogs were confiscated.  Mira is now in our care where she is looking for a family that will provide her with a loving and warm home, where she means more to her family than just a puppy making machine. Mira is very outgoing and extremely smart.  She can open latches and will jump most any fence, she just loves to be with the other dogs and will stop at nothing to get to them.  Right now she is being treated a flight risk as we just don't know what she is capable of.  Training will go along way for Mira, it will not only teach her good manners, but training helps with mental stimulation which in turn burns off energy.  She is young, has a lot to learn, needs structure in a home and family can meet her needs.  Ask to meet this beauty.

DESCRIPTION:

Crombie is one of 22 dogs from the Carolina's that needed help due to Hurricane Florence.

This precious boy is so loving and sweet. He yearns for the attention of humans, needing a family of his very own that will commit to him for his lifetime. Just look at that face, those eye's say it all.  He is settling into his foster home so please watch for updates as his foster family gets to know him better.

Updates:

Hi there...It's me, Crombie, checking in. I want to tell you a little about myself. My foster mom calls me a big barrel of adorableness. I love my human foster sibling. We could snuggle for hours with me giving her lots of kisses. My walks are awesome. I walk nicely on the leash and am learning to sit to get my leash on. The crate is a good place to be and sometimes I go in there even when the door is open. I love my foster family but would love my furever family more. If you want a snuggle or two, ask to meet me!!

Unfortunately, Crombie tested heartworm positive when seen by MAGSR's vet. This could have been avoided had he been kept on monthly heartworm preventatives. Crombie is in the beginning stages of his heartworm treatment, which of course MAGSR will pay for his entire treatment. Treatment is expensive, but Crombie is certainly worth the cost. Donations towards his treatment would be greatly appreciated, this would also help us save other dogs with medical needs. He will have to take it slow for the next few months while he undergoes treatment, so lots of rest will be in order.

Hi there! Crombie here....I have made myself right at home in my foster home and my personality hasn't changed a bit. I am very calm and relaxed. I am on activity restriction but that's no big deal for me cause I don't mind my crate at all. Slow walks give me time to sniff some extra and no running, jumping or playing isn't so bad for the next couple of months. I spend my time out of the crate either on my foster mom's lap or laying next to my human foster sibling. I eat and drink in my crate so I know it's a good place to be. Getting out of my crate can be challenging because I'm excited to get out, so I don't want to sit, but my foster mom makes sure I do before we can go out. Hopefully this heart worm thing doesn't scare you away ... MAGSR takes care of all of it and all you need to do is give my my medicine, keep me calm during the treatment (which isn't tough) and love me (that's the easy part) Talk to you soon....Crombie

It's me again! I have had my first ventures with the resident dogs this week. There is a dominant female shepherd and a second in command. The dominant shepherd loves me but can't figure out why I don't know what playing is. So we just chew bones together on the floor. Maybe I will figure out play in time but hopefully not too soon because I'm on exercise restriction and then on crate restriction during my heartworm treatment. As for the other smaller resident dog, she makes sure I know she is second in command. We don't growl or fight, but she definitely isn't thrilled to have me around, so I just avoid her. All in all, the few weeks we spent just smelling each other on our humans has worked out well. At least I have found a new friend. Keep a look out for me because I'm attending events until I get my first heartworm treatment injection. Catch you later.....Crombie

Hello Again....Thought I would share some things coming into the holiday season as we all think of what we should be thankful for.....Some of these things dogs never have.

I'm thankful for a warm bed to sleep in. I'm thankful for always having food. I'm thankful for bone and toys to chew on (because I'm activity restriction.) I'm thankful for love from my foster family. I'm thankful for the resident dogs that show me acceptance and love. I'm thankful for the love and attention the resident children shower on me. Most of all I'm thankful for the heart worm treatment MAGSR is giving me so I can lead a happy and healthy life. What would make me most thankful of would be my furever family to welcome me into their family. If that;s you please put in an application. Sincerely Crombie

Kumo came to us from a local shelter, he is now looking for a warm home and loving family.  He is a sweet friendly boy with a unique look as one eye is brown and the other blue.  He gets along well with other dogs, he was a rockstar in dog play groups.

Updates:

Kumo is settling in nicely in his foster home. Once he gets to know his humans, he is very dedicated, follows them around, and loves lots of attention.  Kumo is house broken and does well when crated. He has no problem letting his humans know when he doesn't like something.  Kumo is starting to get more active and playful, especially with the resident female dog. When it's time to eat, Kumo gets very excited and starts chasing his tail, and running in a circle.  Kumo is changing for the better since he arrived into his foster home. He shows signs of being a very active dog, and loves to chew on balls. He also loves to put his front paws in his human's lap, lay against and give his human kisses.  Kumo is looking for his forever home - is that home with you?

Kumo has settled in nicely to his foster home. He loves attention and follows his humans around. He loves tennis balls, he plays with them for hours, running around and chewing on them. He goes into the crate easily. When Kumo figures out his the schedule, he'll do it before you tell him. Kumo is a very active dog. Kumo loves feeding time - he runs around in circles, jumps up & down, and barks & whines. It's very funny to see. He does ride good in the car, loves to go outside. Luisa came to us from a not so good situation.  She was used as a breeding dog, she was not provided with proper care or adequate living conditions.  Thankfully after complaints and an investigation she, along with other dogs were confiscated.  Luisa is now in our care where she is looking for a family that will provide her with a loving and warm home, where she means more to her family than just a puppy machine.  Luisa is young and beautiful, she requires training to learn about life, good manners and living in a home.  Yes, you will have to put work into her, provide structure, love and proper care, but she is so worth it.

Updates:

Luisa is settling in nicely in her foster home - she's a very nice, sweet girl and has such a nice coat and coloring!!! Luisa is experiencing a whole new world in and outside the home. She is skittish and unfamiliar with a lot of things which is understandable. Her foster parents take her for walks about 4 or more times a day. She is leery of people, dogs that want to engage in play, things that move (kids sledding) and loud unexpected noises. She is fine with sounds around the house but anything out of the ordinary startles her, also not surprising. Luisa appears to be housebroken and doesn't much like when her person leaves her home and may bark some. Luisa is learning to walk on a leash - she walks nicely, but needs a gentle reminder to heel every once in a while - she is learning other commands as well. If you have the time and patience to work with this sweet girl, please ask to meet her.

Frankie was surrendered to us as he was too big and strong for his elderly family.  He has been to dog parks and did well except for one encounter with one dog.  On walks he would pull and bark at other dogs, but we are unsure if that's because he wanted to meet them or not.  When the grandchildren came to visit he did well and would actually become depressed when they left.  He does require training as he has never been to training.  Training is absolutely a must as it teaches good manners, obedience and creates a bond with his new family.

Updates:

Wow, this has sure been an action packed couple of days! My Mommy and Daddy couldn't handle a big fellow like me so they brought me to something called a rescue and that sure is how I feel. I went home with a lady that I've become quite attached to, and she makes me feel safe, which I needed and didn't even know it. She's introduced me to her fur babies and I sure do like to play with her dogs. She says I'm a sweet baby in a big fuzzy bear costume! I've also gotten a bath and blow out, which I didn't like very much, but she told me I was a very good boy during it, so that's cool! She took me to the vet for a checkup and they loved me there, I was scared but I just tried to hide. I like squeaky toys, frisbees and treats, especially the treats - which I take very gently! I can "come" and "sit" but I will need a lot more training because I'm still a baby! Do you think you could handle the training for a big strong puppy like me? I'd really love to make some new friends!

Kenya was adopted from our rescue when she was just a puppy in 2006.  Sadly her adopter, due to personal reasons, is no longer able to care for her.  As you can imagine Kenya's world as she knew it has been turned upside down.  She is currently in a loving foster home with her foster family helping her with the adjustment. She is anxious , eating very little and obviously does not understand what is going on or where her family is.

Don't try to tell this senior to slow down; Kenya is quite athletic and runs and plays just fine, thank you very much!  Kenya loves to go for car rides and long walks with her foster family, as well as snuggling up for head rubs.  She has settled into her foster home nicely, also enjoying naps on her dog bed, hanging out with her foster siblings, and taking her chew bones wherever she goes.  This affectionate lady walks well on leash and knows her basic commands.  If you would like to meet Kenya, please contact our Adoptions Coordinator for more information.

Updates:

Shadow had a vet visit that went well, he was very social at the vet's office and we did not have any issues whatsoever.  He was easy to leash up, easy to move around and is just an all around great boy.  He is gawky and goofy.

Chevy found himself in a shelter very underweight.  He has been diagnosed with EPI, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency.  This is caused when the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to properly digest food.  This is very easily treated by adding enzymes to each meal which helps the body digest food. More information can be found at epi4dogs.com along with before and after pictures of dogs that have EPI. Now that Chevy has been receiving the enzymes he needs he has gained weight.  Please do not let EPI deter you from considering Chevy, he deserves a family to love and care for him and in return he will give you his devotion. Chevy needs to be properly introduced to new dogs, he does not do well with face to face meeting the first time round.  Once he has been properly introduced he does well.  He is now in a foster home, please watch for updates.

Updates:

Chevy is a sweet young dog looking for a forever home to provide consistency, structure and training with a hander who has prior GSD experience. Chevy is housebroken and crate trained. He hasn’t spent much time in a home - he’s learning about stairs and his reflection in glass doors. He’s also learning what not to do, like counter surf, jump on people and be respectful to the resident dogs. He isn’t aggressive rather he wants to play and can be a little too forward. He needs to learn both people and dog manners. He does not appear to have had any prior training and is new to a prong collar. He responds very well to a light touch and seems to be a quickly learner once he understands what you want. He’s interested in squirrels and if a dog is barking in the hood, he responds in kind. For a young untrained dog, he is fairly calm and easy to handle. He doesn’t pull much on the leash during a walk. He likes to lean into his person, loves attention and gives kisses. He’s ok with being brushed and is getting accustomed to his ears, feet and mouth being handled. His EPI is well managed, with enzymes on his food, mixed and soaked in warm water for 20 minutes and dinner is served - Easy! If you are looking for a dog that is easy to train and loves people and you can provide love, toys, and training - look no further - Chevy is the one for you!

Chevy is adjusting to life inside a home. He is still learning dog to dog manners as he likes to run up to a dog and bark. Not the best social skill for a dog. He is getting more comfortable around people, but still needs slow introductions to people - we’re taking it slow. He wants to approach on his own terms. Once he knows you're ok, he's fine. Chevy is letting his human know that he’s not comfortable. He doesn’t like collar or people messing with his neck or hands over his head - his foster mom is working on that with him. With his EPI, he gets a few freeze dried liver treats to help with training. A calm, slow and gentle hand wins the day with Chevy - just take it slow and easy. Chevy crates beautifully and loves to talk to the resident female GSD when he wants to play. Chevy is getting settled in and is adjusting well - he’s a fast learner. Overall, Chevy is a sweetheart with a few quirks. If you have the interest in working with Chevy to provide the structure and training he needs and patience to earn his trust, please ask to meet him.

Hi! Chevy here, I thought I would give my own update. When I arrived in MAGSR's care 5 weeks ago, I wasn’t feeling so good and needed to rest. Now that I’m feeling better, I have a lot more energy and I love to run and play!  I think that’s why they call me Chevy Chase sometimes. I love to chase and wrestle with the resident young dog. There are things here I’ve never seen before like stairs, but now I run up and down them like I’ve been doing it my entire life. They also have balls here. I didn’t get it at first, but now, I LOVE to chase balls.  They take me to this big field and throw it as far as they can. I run like a bullet to get the ball and come right back for more. I stay close to my people. Like most GSDs, I am protective when there’s a knock at the door or something out of place is happening. I’m kinda shy around new people, but I love my foster family so when I get used to you, I am very affectionate. I’m really not crazy about going to the vet. My foster mom uses this word “no” - I understand that means I have to stop doing whatever it is I’m doing. If you don’t keep an eye on me, I might chew up your favorite baseball cap (Sorry). I don’t mind the crate at all and I’m really quiet in it, unless I have to go potty, then I softly whine. I always go outside. I haven’t had one single accident inside the house. I’ve heard them say I’ve come a long way in a short period of time - whatever that means. All I know is, I’m a young pup looking for a place to call home. I need someone who understands my breed because I can be willful unless it’s something I want to do. Could that be you? I hope so, I’m here waiting.  Let’s play ball!

DESCRIPTION:

Oliver found himself in a shelter after he was picked up as a stray. He is sweet, handsome boy who is looking for a forever family and home. He is somewhat shy right now, but who can blame him with the recent changes he has been through. Training will help him build confidence, learn good manners and bond with his family.

Updates:

Some dogs simply have a special something about them. Oliver is one of those dogs. Coming into MAGSR as a stray, Oliver clearly hadn't experienced the type of life he so clearly deserves. He lacked socialization and the proper care all dogs need. Since his arrival this impressive boy has made incredible strides in a short amount of time. In his foster home Oliver has had the opportunity to become both housebroken and crate trained. He has discovered the joy of toys and will even entertain himself. Having entered into a large pack, Oliver has adjusted fantastically to the male and female foster fur siblings with which he currently lives. His easy-going and somewhat submissive personality have helped him easily adjust to pack life in the home.

Oliver's fosters are working with him daily to develop his leash manners as well as gain experience with the outside world. They are impressed with how quickly he is learning about and adjusting to the world around him. Although Oliver continues to need some time when warming up to new people, his sweet and playful personality slowly shines through. We are sure that Oliver will thrive in a patient household that will provide him with the guidance and training all dogs need in order to become good canine citizens. If Oliver sounds like a great addition to your family, please inquire about him today.

Oliver was returned to MAGSR because he was protective of his human and home and his family would not put him away when guests were over. Oliver also was out unsupervised, jumped the fence and had gotten loose numerous times and had many unsupervised field trips around the city, sometimes not returning for hours. Oliver was not managed properly and he is lucky to still be alive. Oliver needs someone who will work with him to keep him contained and manage him by putting him away in a secure room and/or crate when people come to the home. If your willing to give Oliver a try, please ask to meet him.

Oliver has had his world turned upside down the last couple of weeks. Oliver is a big softie and loves belly and butt rubs. Since his return to MAGSR, Oliver has been friendly with everyone he's met. He can be stubborn too when given commands, but our volunteers are working with him on this. Oliver needs someone who will commit to him, keep him contained and work with him. Could that someone be you?

Oliver has settled in nicely with his foster family and established a quick bond, especially with his foster mom.  Oliver’s calm and charming personality make him a great company.  No potty training needed; he lets you know when, and handles his foster parent’s 8-9 hour workday without a hitch.  Oliver is fully house-trained and house-friendly – he remains calm in the house, does not bother any home items, and is trained to not get on any furniture. He is not a chewer and is not even interested in chew toys.  He is sharing the house with a 12 year old Irish Wolfhound mix who has admittedly been a grumpy, jealous, and competitive pest to Oliver, but Oliver has been calm and cool throughout. They get better every day, and the humans enjoy seeing them snoozing side-by-side by the fireplace.

Oliver is a terrific walker. Well behaved, willing to stay at heel/left. He pays zero attention to the other neighborhood dogs with underground fences, even when they charge towards him. When walking through a familiar neighborhood, he has excellent leash manners. When hiking in a park or through the woods, the new sites and smells are far too exciting and some leash corrections are needed as he much prefers to roam and explore.  He is an enthusiastic runner but is perfectly happy with just a walk too. Oliver is also great in a vehicle and long trips are not an issue, but he needs some work to get in, which should improve with practice, time, patience and commitment.

This sweet pup is a keen observer and a quick learner.  He knows “sit”, “down”, “wait” (letting his human go through doors first), and his foster parents are working with him to be more consistent with “come.”  He responds very well to calm approaches and positive praise; less so to assertive commands, as he is stubborn. He is eager to make his foster mom happy and pays attention to what will earn him praise. It should be noted that Oliver is an impressively skilled escape artist, which can be managed with additional security measures (not relying on a simple door latch or crate closure; locks over any basic latches). While he does not get into anything in the house, he is motivated to get out of enclosures. The foster family persists with crate training as all of MAGSR’s fosters do, but Oliver much prefers the extra space in the mud room. He also seems perfectly fine with the run of the whole house. He prefers learning and working over playing. The foster family has found much humor in Oliver’s attempts to outsmart them. The chess match with Oliver is a great deal of fun. If Oliver sounds like a good fit for your future, please ask to meet him!

Oliver cannot seem to catch a break.  He has been returned as his adopters have decided he will not make it as a service dog.  The adopters were told upfront that he most likely would not be suitable as a service dog, but they assured us they would keep him no matter what.  Well, they failed Oliver and he is now back with us looking for a forever family.

Braggs was surrendered to a shelter as his former person said he worked too much, not having enough time to care for Braggs.  Former owner said that he is good with dogs, cats and children.  We have yet to see him interact with children and cats.  He is a friendly boy, young and playful.  Of course he needs to attend training classes to learn good manners.

Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 7 years 11 months
Color: Black & Tan
Current Size: 50 lbs
Housebroken: Yes

Good With Kids: Older Kids Only
Good With Cats: Unknown

DESCRIPTION:

Acton was a stray to a shelter, so we have no prior history.  During his time with us he has been friendly with our volunteers and did well with dog introductions.  Training is imperative with all dogs that are adopted from us, they  need to learn manners and become accustomed to their home and family life.

Updates:

Some great things about Acton - he loves people. He really loves snuggles and will get up nice and close for attention. Acton loves to play ball and definitely knows what toys are. When he needs to go potty, Acton will let you know. When on a walk, Acton always talks care of his business and is really good about redirecting if needed. Once the household is settled, Acton will also settle down and relax. This guy is a great companion for someone who likes to take long walks and would likely be good for a runner.
