DESCRIPTION:

Kenya was adopted from our rescue when she was just a puppy in 2006.  Sadly her adopter, due to personal reasons, is no longer able to care for her.  As you can imagine Kenya's world as she knew it has been turned upside down.  She is currently in a loving foster home with her foster family helping her with the adjustment. She is anxious , eating very little and obviously does not understand what is going on or where her family is.

Don't try to tell this senior to slow down; Kenya is quite athletic and runs and plays just fine, thank you very much!  Kenya loves to go for car rides and long walks with her foster family, as well as snuggling up for head rubs.  She has settled into her foster home nicely, also enjoying naps on her dog bed, hanging out with her foster siblings, and taking her chew bones wherever she goes.  This affectionate lady walks well on leash and knows her basic commands.  If you would like to meet Kenya, please contact our Adoptions Coordinator for more information.

Shadow

Shadow adopted
ShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadowShadow
Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 7 years 6 months
Color: Black
Current Size: 80 lbs
Housebroken: Unknown
Obedience Trained: No
Altered: No

Good With Kids: Older kids, over 12
Good With Cats: No
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Shadow was a surrender as his former person had far too many dogs and was not able to afford them all.  He is just stunning with his all black shiny coat.  He has been very friendly with our volunteers.  He does well with other dogs, he especially likes the females.  With other male dogs he can be bossy, so it must be the right fit.  Training of course is mandatory and will go along way in teaching him proper manners, good life skills and help him and his new family to adjust to one another.

Updates:

Shadow had a vet visit that went well, he was very social at the vet's office and we did not have any issues whatsoever.  He was easy to leash up, easy to move around and is just an all around great boy.  He is gawky and goofy.

DESCRIPTION:

Chevy found himself in a shelter very underweight.  He has been diagnosed with EPI, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency.  This is caused when the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to properly digest food.  This is very easily treated by adding enzymes to each meal which helps the body digest food. More information can be found at epi4dogs.com along with before and after pictures of dogs that have EPI. Now that Chevy has been receiving the enzymes he needs he has gained weight.  Please do not let EPI deter you from considering Chevy, he deserves a family to love and care for him and in return he will give you his devotion. Chevy needs to be properly introduced to new dogs, he does not do well with face to face meeting the first time round.  Once he has been properly introduced he does well.  He is now in a foster home, please watch for updates.

Updates:

Chevy is a sweet young dog looking for a forever home to provide consistency, structure and training with a hander who has prior GSD experience. Chevy is housebroken and crate trained. He hasn’t spent much time in a home - he’s learning about stairs and his reflection in glass doors. He’s also learning what not to do, like counter surf, jump on people and be respectful to the resident dogs. He isn’t aggressive rather he wants to play and can be a little too forward. He needs to learn both people and dog manners. He does not appear to have had any prior training and is new to a prong collar. He responds very well to a light touch and seems to be a quickly learner once he understands what you want. He’s interested in squirrels and if a dog is barking in the hood, he responds in kind. For a young untrained dog, he is fairly calm and easy to handle. He doesn’t pull much on the leash during a walk. He likes to lean into his person, loves attention and gives kisses. He’s ok with being brushed and is getting accustomed to his ears, feet and mouth being handled. His EPI is well managed, with enzymes on his food, mixed and soaked in warm water for 20 minutes and dinner is served - Easy! If you are looking for a dog that is easy to train and loves people and you can provide love, toys, and training - look no further - Chevy is the one for you!

Chevy is adjusting to life inside a home. He is still learning dog to dog manners as he likes to run up to a dog and bark. Not the best social skill for a dog. He is getting more comfortable around people, but still needs slow introductions to people - we’re taking it slow. He wants to approach on his own terms. Once he knows you're ok, he's fine. Chevy is letting his human know that he’s not comfortable. He doesn’t like collar or people messing with his neck or hands over his head - his foster mom is working on that with him. With his EPI, he gets a few freeze dried liver treats to help with training. A calm, slow and gentle hand wins the day with Chevy - just take it slow and easy. Chevy crates beautifully and loves to talk to the resident female GSD when he wants to play. Chevy is getting settled in and is adjusting well - he’s a fast learner. Overall, Chevy is a sweetheart with a few quirks. If you have the interest in working with Chevy to provide the structure and training he needs and patience to earn his trust, please ask to meet him.

Hi! Chevy here, I thought I would give my own update. When I arrived in MAGSR's care 5 weeks ago, I wasn’t feeling so good and needed to rest. Now that I’m feeling better, I have a lot more energy and I love to run and play!  I think that’s why they call me Chevy Chase sometimes. I love to chase and wrestle with the resident young dog. There are things here I’ve never seen before like stairs, but now I run up and down them like I’ve been doing it my entire life. They also have balls here. I didn’t get it at first, but now, I LOVE to chase balls.  They take me to this big field and throw it as far as they can. I run like a bullet to get the ball and come right back for more. I stay close to my people. Like most GSDs, I am protective when there’s a knock at the door or something out of place is happening. I’m kinda shy around new people, but I love my foster family so when I get used to you, I am very affectionate. I’m really not crazy about going to the vet. My foster mom uses this word “no” - I understand that means I have to stop doing whatever it is I’m doing. If you don’t keep an eye on me, I might chew up your favorite baseball cap (Sorry). I don’t mind the crate at all and I’m really quiet in it, unless I have to go potty, then I softly whine. I always go outside. I haven’t had one single accident inside the house. I’ve heard them say I’ve come a long way in a short period of time - whatever that means. All I know is, I’m a young pup looking for a place to call home. I need someone who understands my breed because I can be willful unless it’s something I want to do. Could that be you? I hope so, I’m here waiting.  Let’s play ball!

Good With Kids: Unknown

DESCRIPTION:

Oliver found himself in a shelter after he was picked up as a stray. He is sweet, handsome boy who is looking for a forever family and home. He is somewhat shy right now, but who can blame him with the recent changes he has been through. Training will help him build confidence, learn good manners and bond with his family.

Updates:

Some dogs simply have a special something about them. Oliver is one of those dogs. Coming into MAGSR as a stray, Oliver clearly hadn't experienced the type of life he so clearly deserves. He lacked socialization and the proper care all dogs need. Since his arrival this impressive boy has made incredible strides in a short amount of time. In his foster home Oliver has had the opportunity to become both housebroken and crate trained. He has discovered the joy of toys and will even entertain himself. Having entered into a large pack, Oliver has adjusted fantastically to the male and female foster fur siblings with which he currently lives. His easy-going and somewhat submissive personality have helped him easily adjust to pack life in the home.

Oliver's fosters are working with him daily to develop his leash manners as well as gain experience with the outside world. They are impressed with how quickly he is learning about and adjusting to the world around him. Although Oliver continues to need some time when warming up to new people, his sweet and playful personality slowly shines through. We are sure that Oliver will thrive in a patient household that will provide him with the guidance and training all dogs need in order to become good canine citizens. If Oliver sounds like a great addition to your family, please inquire about him today.

Oliver was returned to MAGSR because he was protective of his human and home and his family would not put him away when guests were over. Oliver also was out unsupervised, jumped the fence and had gotten loose numerous times and had many unsupervised field trips around the city, sometimes not returning for hours. Oliver was not managed properly and he is lucky to still be alive. Oliver needs someone who will work with him to keep him contained and manage him by putting him away in a secure room and/or crate when people come to the home. If your willing to give Oliver a try, please ask to meet him.

Oliver has had his world turned upside down the last couple of weeks. Oliver is a big softie and loves belly and butt rubs. Since his return to MAGSR, Oliver has been friendly with everyone he's met. He can be stubborn too when given commands, but our volunteers are working with him on this. Oliver needs someone who will commit to him, keep him contained and work with him. Could that someone be you?

Oliver has settled in nicely with his foster family and established a quick bond, especially with his foster mom.  Oliver’s calm and charming personality make him a great company.  No potty training needed; he lets you know when, and handles his foster parent’s 8-9 hour workday without a hitch.  Oliver is fully house-trained and house-friendly – he remains calm in the house, does not bother any home items, and is trained to not get on any furniture. He is not a chewer and is not even interested in chew toys.  He is sharing the house with a 12 year old Irish Wolfhound mix who has admittedly been a grumpy, jealous, and competitive pest to Oliver, but Oliver has been calm and cool throughout. They get better every day, and the humans enjoy seeing them snoozing side-by-side by the fireplace.

Oliver is a terrific walker. Well behaved, willing to stay at heel/left. He pays zero attention to the other neighborhood dogs with underground fences, even when they charge towards him. When walking through a familiar neighborhood, he has excellent leash manners. When hiking in a park or through the woods, the new sites and smells are far too exciting and some leash corrections are needed as he much prefers to roam and explore.  He is an enthusiastic runner but is perfectly happy with just a walk too. Oliver is also great in a vehicle and long trips are not an issue, but he needs some work to get in, which should improve with practice, time, patience and commitment.

This sweet pup is a keen observer and a quick learner.  He knows “sit”, “down”, “wait” (letting his human go through doors first), and his foster parents are working with him to be more consistent with “come.”  He responds very well to calm approaches and positive praise; less so to assertive commands, as he is stubborn. He is eager to make his foster mom happy and pays attention to what will earn him praise. It should be noted that Oliver is an impressively skilled escape artist, which can be managed with additional security measures (not relying on a simple door latch or crate closure; locks over any basic latches). While he does not get into anything in the house, he is motivated to get out of enclosures. The foster family persists with crate training as all of MAGSR’s fosters do, but Oliver much prefers the extra space in the mud room. He also seems perfectly fine with the run of the whole house. He prefers learning and working over playing. The foster family has found much humor in Oliver’s attempts to outsmart them. The chess match with Oliver is a great deal of fun. If Oliver sounds like a good fit for your future, please ask to meet him!

Oliver cannot seem to catch a break.  He has been returned as his adopters have decided he will not make it as a service dog.  The adopters were told upfront that he most likely would not be suitable as a service dog, but they assured us they would keep him no matter what.  Well, they failed Oliver and he is now back with us looking for a forever family.

DESCRIPTION:

Beethoven is one of 22 dogs from the Carolina's that needed help due to Hurricane Florence.

Beethoven is a furry friendly guy who is looking for his forever home and family.  With all of the stress and changes he has been gone through and a long transport to our care, he has handled it well.  As he is new to us we will continue to get to know him better and post updates.

Updates:

Unfortunately, Beethoven tested heartworm positive when seen by MAGSR's vet. This could have been avoided had he been kept on monthly heartworm preventatives. Beethoven is in the beginning stages of his heartworm treatment, which of course MAGSR will pay for his entire treatment. Treatment is expensive, but Beethoven is certainly worth the cost. Donations towards his treatment would be greatly appreciated, this would also help us save other dogs with medical needs. He will have to take it slow for the next few months while he undergoes treatment, so lots of rest will be in order.

Updates:

Some great things about Acton - he loves people. He really loves snuggles and will get up nice and close for attention. Acton loves to play ball and definitely knows what toys are. When he needs to go potty, Acton will let you know. When on a walk, Acton always talks care of his business and is really good about redirecting if needed. Once the household is settled, Acton will also settle down and relax. This guy is a great companion for someone who likes to take long walks and would likely be good for a runner.

DESCRIPTION:

Maren was surrendered to us as her elderly caregivers were moving and could not keep her.  She has not had any training or guidance, nor has she been exposed to the world around her.  She will need a family who will commit to training to help her build her confidence and of course to learn good canine manners.  It is important that Maren has ongoing socialization and is introduced to the sounds, sights and smells of the world.  It is her families job to guide her, work with her daily, provide lots of playtime, exercise, love and care.

Updates:

Ahsoka, formerly known as Maren, unfortunately has been returned as she was too protective of her home.  She did not like when visitors came to the home.  This can be managed by putting her away in a secure room and/or crate when people come to the home.  She will also benefit greatly from a strong leader who will provide appropriate correction and training.  She would do best in a home that does not have frequent visitors and with a family that is willing to put her away when visitors do come.  She desperately needs someone who will commit to her to help her learn good manners through a good training program.

Ahsoka is doing beautifully in her foster home. She loves her foster dad, who takes her on bike rides/runs, and she's in love with the resident dogs, especially the male. Ahsoka stays focused on her handler and looks to them for guidance, so as long as the handler is in charge, Ahsoka is a happy and well behaved girl. She doesn't much like things that startle her, but corrects quickly and easily from reacting. Ahsoka will still need to be managed properly to ensure success for her and everyone else involved, which is why Ahsoka will only meet those who have prior experience with the breed. Ahsoka has come a long way - she is a happy and confident girl now and is waiting patiently for that special family to pick her. Is that you?

DESCRIPTION:

Kovu has not had much stability in his life, he has had 3 families before coming into our care.  His last person realized that he needed more than she could provide in the way of training and knew that he needed an experienced family to help him adjust to a new life.  Kovu has not been well socialized or provided with proper training.  He can be protective of his person if he feels you are not in control.  He will bark at people he doesn't know, but takes correction and redirection well.  He needs slower introductions to new people, dogs and situations in order for him to feel comfortable.  Training is an absolute must for Kovu and his new family as this will help everyone learn more about Kovu and get him on the right track.  Kovu will only meet those with a lot of experience with the breed and are strong, knowledgeable handlers.  Kovu needs someone who is going to commit to him, provide him with direction and consistency in his life.  Our volunteers are working with him, he learns quickly.

Updates:

Kovu has settled into his foster home. Kovu has become affectionate and attentive to his foster dad. Unfortunately, Kovu was inexperienced, untrained and poorly socialized when arriving into MAGSR’s care. Kovu is anxious when meeting new people and needs a handler that understands this to ensure slow introductions with treats. Kovu has a high food drive and responds well to training in obedience with food rewards. Kovu has been confident learning new things and being placed in new situations. Poor Kovu must never have had toys before because he has discovered toys in his foster home – balls, tug ropes, etc.and has a fairly strong ball drive. Kovu is respectful in the home when not crated and is housebroken; however he likes to counter surf at times, and has a special interest in used paper towels. Kovu would do well in a quiet home without young kids or other pets. If Kovu sounds like he could be a match for your family, and you have experience with GSDs, please ask to meet him today.

Bradford was a frequent flyer at his local shelter as his previous family did nothing to ensure his safety.  He was constantly leaving the property and being picked up running the streets. Thankfully this very big handsome boy is now safe in our care and is now looking for a family that will ensure his safety by not allowing him to be outside unsupervised or wandering the streets. Bradford has a calm disposition and is so gentle for such a large boy. However, when he gets more comfortable, he is powerful in his movements, largely because of his size and needs a strong handler. Bradford is very timid and unsure at this time and therefore is considered a flight risk. Structure and building his confidence is what this sweet boy needs.  Training will do him wonders and help create a bond with his new family.

DESCRIPTION:

Nika is one of 22 dogs from the Carolina's that needed help due to Hurricane Florence.

Nika has been through a lot in the last few days and just arrived from a long transport into our care.  She is still settling into her new living arrangements and getting use to her surroundings.  This seems to have upset Nika and she will need time to settle in.  She was fine with our volunteers, but can be nervous with too many people handling her.  For this reason we will not place her in a home with children at this time.  We will update once Nika has settled more and we get to know her better

Updates:

Nika is a lovely female German Shepherd on the smaller side. She is settling in to her foster home slowly but steadily. It is clear that she is still a little unsure of what has happened to her, but from her behavior, her foster family is certain Nika has been in a home situation before. Nika loves playing on the long line leash, which gives her lots of room to run and exercise. She is a very curious girl, wanting to sniff and check everything out, but is starting to return to her handler from the end of the leash when asked to come. She also knows sit, when she is reminded. Nika is working on not jumping up to greet people, by having them turn away and ignore her until she sits. Nika has been slow to start eating, but is finally getting on a normal schedule. When adopted, her new family will need to be patient when she first goes home with them; until she feels safer and more comfortable, she may not show much interest in food. She is very well-behaved in her crate, and although she doesn’t love going into it on her own, she will do so and lays down quietly until it is time to play again!  She has successfully met three different dogs here on the farm, two males and one female puppy. She was appropriately tentative about the introductions, but did not show any aggression or dominance which required intervention. After the first few moments, all was well. Her foster mom has not had the opportunity to observe her interactions with children of any age yet.

Nika does stairs easily and is learning more about walking properly on a leash, but will need to go to training to become a better canine citizen, as all dogs should. She learns quickly and loves to play with and chew on her ball. She is not particularly food-driven, and prefers to take any chew-treats she is given and hide them. Nika is going to be a wonderful dog for someone looking for a dog past the puppy years and habits, but with years of love to give. Having had numerous foster dogs, Nika easily joins the ranks of one of her foster family’s easiest fosters. In the right home situation, after time settling in and when she is feeling secure, Nika will make an outstanding addition to a lucky family.

We have no idea what Oti is mixed with, but we know it is a whole lot of cuteness.  He is patiently waiting to find his forever home and family.  With some basic obedience training and structure from his family he will learn good canine manners.  As our volunteers get to know him better we will post updates.

Updates:

Wow...hang on to your hat when you meet Oti!  He's nothing but pure excitement, and twists, and turns, and jumps and all kinds of happy! Our volunteers are working with Oti to curb his jumping - this boy just gets very excited and happy to see people! He walks well on leash and knows sit, both with and without treats, and down with treats. Continuing his training, as with all dogs, is a must. Oti takes his treats gently, loves his belly rubs and pets, and is definitely a leaner. He's a very friendly dog, not aggressive to other dogs at all, even when they bark at him, he just wants to play! He also likes to play fetch and brings the ball right back to you, or at least, somewhere near you. Oti really needs someone to love on and spend some time with him in the worst way - could that someone be you?

DESCRIPTION:

Valerie is one of 22 dogs from the Carolina's that needed help due to Hurricane Florence.

She is a little skittish at this time which is understandable after all of the recent changes she has endured.  She can take a little bit of time to warm up to new people, but once she does she is very playful.  She also enjoys the company of other dogs.

Updates:

Valerie is settling in to her foster home. She is quiet and a total sweetheart, but very skittish girl. Valerie loves her crate and dog bed, she's great walking and circles some because of different noises that startle her. Valerie is working on her obedience commands. Once Valerie gets to know her human, she greets tail wagging and loves to give kisses and get attention. Valerie also likes the resident dog and feels more comfortable having another dog around. At this time, Valerie is considered a high flight risk and needs a quiet and calm household, which is why we've marked her for older kids only. Valerie needs a patient human who will commit to her and love her and let her trust again. If Valerie sounds like a match for your family, and you can have the patience to go slow to gain her trust, ask to meet her.

Valerie is settling in to her foster home. Valerie is a warm, happy go lucky dog who loves attention. She loves being around her human friends. Valerie will be best suited for a house that has a fenced in yard because she likes some privacy when doing her business. She needs a sturdy plastic crate or stronger when left alone to keep her inside the crate. She enjoys the company of other dogs and would do well in a home with another dog and loves chasing each other around and playing. If you're willing to give Valerie a chance, please ask to meet her today!

Valerie has settled in nicely and come out of her shell. She happily comes to her humans wagging her tail. When Valerie lays down, she makes funny noises. She loves dog beds, and lays on them while her humans are home and at night. Valerie is getting better with new people. She's understanding that humans are friendly, but she's still a little skittish. When we go for walks, Valerie is on squirrel alert. When she sees a squirrel her head pops up, her tail wags like crazy, and she runs around. She's the cutest little thing when she does that. When Valerie and the resident dog go to a fenced in place, they play off leash, run around and chase each other. Valerie is looking for a forever home with a forever person - can you be that person?

Sheeba found herself at a shelter needing rescue.  She is a young, high energy, untrained pup that needs a family who will commit to training and providing her with structure.  It's obvious no one has taken the time to teach her manners.  She will require a family who has the time and patience it will take to burn off her energy by going for walks, playtime and of course training.  She is an absolute love, smothering people with puppy kisses and lobbying for your attention and affection.

Updates:

Young Sheeba has greatly benefited from her 13 weeks of professional training at Stateline Canine. Originally, she found herself at a shelter and didn’t know much about interacting properly with the world when she came to MAGSR. But after professional training, she is much more able to enjoyably interact with people and normal daily activities. She is much more observant of her handler now, and has learned basic commands. Her leash skills have also improved a great deal. She has completed on & off leash training and comes with private lessons for her future owners. Sheeba has an awesome temperament and will be a wonderful companion for an active person or family. She needs a home that will give her an outlet for her energy and will follow through with the training. She has a lot of energy and had zero focus and no ability to settle prior to training. She is very social with people and works very well once bonded with someone. Sheeba is ready to move on to a forever home. If you would like to meet Sheeba, she is ready to meet you and your family! Updates:

Gunner came to us from South Carolina by way of Tennessee, thanks to hurricane Florence.  This poor baby has had a lot of upheaval in his short life and all he wants is love.  He's a leaner, and a licker, and he loves naps in the sun, such a gentle soul.  He doesn't know many commands, but he's a super fast learner.  Gunner needs someone who will show him kindness and take it slow to reassure him he's safe, loved and won't be jostled about anymore.  Could that someone be you?

Good With Kids: Older kids, over 16

DESCRIPTION:

Murphy made his way to us from a shelter where he was a stray.  We have no past history for him, so we are getting to know him.  He requires a slower approach when meeting new people.   He is in need of training which will help him learn good manners, build his confidence and bond with his new family.

Updates:

Murphy is an interesting high energy pup. He’s likely had very little structure in his life to this point and is in need of a strong willed person or family to help guide his future and provide consistent and strong structure, especially with his indoor manners. He’s easy to leash up and walk, both on long and short leash. He’s loves car rides but seems unfamiliar with exiting or entering the car. He is unfamiliar with stairs but is learning to handle them quickly. He has a very high ball drive and will bring the ball back to his human as long as the ball is thrown again. Murphy loves his humans of all ages and wants to be with them always. He needs some work on his manners and is prone to countertop surfing. He also needs help learning that his crate is a safe place to stay. He takes treats gently and is very treat motivated. He is happy to work with anyone willing to give him a chance, could that be you?

Murphy is a sweet boy who takes time to get to know you.  Once he decides you're his friend, you are allowed the honor of bestowing belly rubs!  And then come the kisses!  He's great on leash, sitting at stops while in heel, knows basic obedience and follows his handler. He's VERY food driven, which is a very handy training tool.  He is going to need someone who can commit to the exercise and training he needs to keep his mind and body healthy.  He's such a handsome boy, do you think you have room for Murphy in your heart and home?

Updates:

Ari is a very sweet dog who is quite gentle and loves his humans. He has learned that stairs are not scary and can even be fun to run up and down on. He is respectful of boundaries in the home (no dogs in kitchen). He is easy to walk on leash, even if his heel is not perfect yet. Ari is aware of other dogs, but does not seem interested nor bothered by them, even if they are barking at him from across the street. Good With Kids: Yes
Good With Cats: Unknown
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Arbor was surrendered as his person said she had no time for him.  Arbor is very much a teenager and is in need of obedience training and structure.  He can be very protective of his person which needs to be corrected.  While this is a trait found in German Shepherds it does need to be managed by their person.  He has good leash manners and is crate trained.  He is currently settling into his foster home, watch for updates.

Updates:

Arbor is starting to relax in his foster home with two resident dogs: a young bossy female shepherd and a laid-back adult male. He likes the human children in the home and is learning not to jump on them, which is how he says I love you right now.

He’s completely unfazed by the roughhousing and noise that accompany young children and so far does not seem to have any objections to having any part of his body touched. Arbor is also learning that humans do not like affectionate nibbles on their ear and hands while receiving kisses. He takes correction nicely.

Arbor is being fed in his crate and that’s where he keeps his bones too. He is not happy when the resident dogs approach the crate while he has food or a food treat in there. He doesn’t seem concerned about the toys. He does not react to the children approaching the crate while he has food in there but that is still being very carefully supervised. He brings balls and toys to the kids to play.

Arbor appears to be housebroken and doesn’t mind the crate. He likes to go for walks and has excellent leash manners. Arbor is very happy to come inside after his walk and knows after 2 days which house he goes into.

Arbor really wants a forever home. He would like to have kids throw balls for him and to go to training to learn good manners. He would be fine as an only dog or with a laid back resident dog. If he goes to live with another high energy dog he will need an owner who is experienced in being the boss while they establish boundaries.

Unfortunately, Arbor tested heartworm positive when seen by MAGSR's vet. This could have been avoided had he been kept on monthly heartworm preventatives. Arbor is in the beginning stages of his heartworm treatment, which of course MAGSR will pay for his entire treatment. Treatment is expensive, but Arbor is certainly worth the cost. Donations towards his treatment would be greatly appreciated, this would also help us save other dogs with medical needs. He will have to take it slow for the next few months while he undergoes treatment, so lots of rest will be in order.

DESCRIPTION:

Merle is one of 22 dogs from the Carolina's that needed help due to Hurricane Florence.

Merle is such a sweet,  handsome boy.  He is a little underweight, approximately 10 more lbs would be his ideal weight.  He is in a foster home and seems to be housebroken and crate trained.  He knows some basic commands such as sit, stay, paw and down.  He enjoys playing with toys and fetch.  As he settles more into his foster home his foster family will provide updates.

Updates:

Merle has been in his foster home for a little over a week, so we know a few more details about him. Merle is a young, handsome boy who has definitely known the comforts of a home in the past. He is fully housebroken – he does well on a schedule and controls himself accordingly. Merle is also crate-trained and goes into his crate without resisting when asked to do so. He knows a couple commands (sit, down, stay, paw) and works for treats, toys or praise. He does not know to heel while walking, but is not difficult to walk on leash. Merle loves toys and will play for hours, usually wanting his human to join with him. He has great ball drive and will fetch/retrieve as long as you are willing to throw it. Merle is very athletic, with a smaller, slim build, and thus suitable for a lot of outdoor doggy activities, which he loves. Merle bonds deeply and quickly and can become protective of his space and his humans. This will need to be addressed with both training and a strong handler. He will also benefit greatly from a strong leader who will provide appropriate correction and training. Slow introductions to new people and animals seem to work best for him. Once he accepts a newcomer, he's very social. Merle is a great young dog, looking for his perfect home. Could that be yours??

Beck, along with other family members, were dumped at the shelter. Not often we are happy when dogs are dumped at shelters, but in this case, they are lucky they were. The family of Shepherds lived outside, no vet care, no vaccines, no preventatives. Beck has a lot to learn about going a good canine citizen and will require training. Please remember that puppies are a lot of work and require a lot of attention from their family - puppies are a ten to twelve year commitment. Puppies are full of energy and can be mischievous – they will whine, have accidents, get into things, and chew on inappropriate things. With time, patience, guidance and training, Beck will become even more of an amazing boy than he already is. Please inquire if Beck sounds like a good match for your family.
