DESCRIPTION:

Lovely Katie Ann was picked up as a stray and sheltered by another rescue while they waited for her stray hold. Unfortunately, no one came forward to claim this lovely girl. Although they enjoyed their time with Katie Ann, the rescue caring for her felt that she would be most likely to find her forever family if she moved into a breed specific rescue. When asked if we could help Katie Ann take the next step toward her forever home, MAGSR immediately stepped forward.

Katie Ann is an affectionate and friendly girl especially with her people. She greatly enjoys the company of the people within her sphere and seems to understand the ins and outs of living with a family. However, as is true with most shepherds, Katie Ann will overbond if given the opportunity. This can cause her to become overprotective of her people, her property, and her home. In order to meet with success, Katie Ann is looking for an experienced household that will work with her to develop a healthy relationship. Boundaries and clear expectations are very helpful to her success. Katie Ann will thrive with routine, leadership, and structure. Training will also go a long way with this lovely girl. Not only will training help Katie Ann bond to her forever family, but it will also help her develop into a good and stable canine citizen. Katie Ann has already begun to learn some basics with our volunteers, but she will flourish with continued training. Although Katie Ann can be walked calmly in areas with other dogs, she is looking for a home where she is the only dog. Best placed with a confident handler, Katie Ann is looking for an active family that will commit to her for a lifetime. If this lovely lady sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet her today.

Obedience Trained: No, I'm a puppy!

DESCRIPTION:

Paris and her ten siblings (the Gilmore puppies) found themselves in an overcrowded shelter in the south. The number of dogs needing placement is simply overwhelming shelters across the country. Unfortunately, these babies, like so many other dogs, were in need of help fast. Recognizing that these babies deserved every opportunity to meet with success, staff at the shelter sent out personal rescue pleas attempting to keep this large family alive. When we heard that the Gilmore puppies needed placement, our incredible team began putting together plans to welcome all eleven babies into the rescue.

The Gilmore puppies are a social, playful, and interactive bunch. They have clearly had opportunities to socialize with people and other animals. However, this process has just begun. It is essential that their forever families continue to provide opportunities to socialize with people and animals in new and safe environments. This will help the Gilmore puppies develop stability and confidence as adult dogs. Training is also critical for these babies as it will not only help them create a healthy bond with their forever families, but it will also help them develop into good canine citizens. The Gilmore puppies have all settled into amazing foster families where they are learning the comforts and routines of living in a home. They are learning about toys, treats, and the joy of a good nap. As they move forward, the Gilmore puppies will be looking for loving forever homes that will continue to provide them with structure, routine, and leadership. Although these babies are cute as can be, please remember that puppies are a lot of work. They will whine, chew, have accidents, and fill your home with endless puppy antics. With time, patience, and training, we are positive these babies will grow into incredible adult dogs. The Gilmore puppies will open for adoption on April 22nd. DESCRIPTION:

Lovely Autumn was adored by her mom who knew this pup was a special girl. When the unthinkable happened and Autumn's mom passed away suddenly, family members stepped up to try to provide her with the love and attention she needed. Although they made sure that Autumn had everything she needed, they knew that she deserved a forever home that could provide her with the attention, exercise, training, and care that all young shepherds need. So, they made the heartbreaking decision to surrender Autumn to MAGSR. We were honored to welcome this special girl into the family and promised we would find her the perfect match.

Autumn is a smart, inquisitive, and playful girl. However, having survived such a large loss in her life, she is still working on transitioning to a life without her mom. Although she is sweet and affectionate, she is also timid and needs a little time to warm up to new people and situations. When given the chance to adjust, Autumn shows off her loyal and playful personality. Living in a foster family, Autumn is continuing to socialize with new people and environments. This socialization is critical and will need to continue with her forever family. Having lived in a home, Autumn knows many of the ins and outs of a household. She is housebroken and crate trained. Like many young dogs, she is still learning what toys are hers and what items should be left alone in the household, but she is quickly learning the difference. Although she does understand many of the rules of living in the home, Autumn will need time to learn the rules and routines of her forever family. When given structure, guidance, and leadership, Autumn thrives. Training will go a long way for this special girl. Not only will training help her develop a strong and lasting bond with her family, but it will also help her develop into a good canine citizen. Autumn is looking for a forever family that is looking for a loyal and cuddly addition to their family. Could that family be you?

They made sure that Maggie was spayed and given the opportunity to meet with success. Recognizing that training is essential for all dogs, the other rescue made sure that Maggie began training right away. An intelligent and driven girl, Maggie loves working. DESCRIPTION:

Genie and her family - Axel, Jackie, Gyspie, Sally, and Birdie - are victims of cruelty and neglect. All six dogs were living in horrific conditions. Chained in shower stalls, living in filth, abused, and starved, they endured unimaginable suffering at the hands of their owner. When word of their situation spread to local authorities, all 6 dogs were confiscated and charges were brought against their owner. Recognizing that these dogs would need significant support, a plea went out to see if they could be moved to the safety of a rescue. MAGSR answered that plea and immediately began working with local groups and animal services to get all six dogs the resources needed (medically and socially) to begin to move forward.

Genie is a young, energetic, intelligent girl. She is looking for an active household that will provide her with the clear structure and routine that all shepherds need. Consistency and leadership are essential to developing stable and confident adult shepherds. This is particularly true in Genie's case as she will try to control the situation if she feels her handler cannot. As a result, Genie will be most successful in a household with a calm, confident, and experienced handler. Coming from a situation with little opportunity for affection or interaction with the world around her, Genie is learning about the smells, sounds, and sites around her. She can be a little timid at first; however, patience and confidence go a long way with her. As is true of all young dogs, Genie will need daily exercise for both her mind and her body. This will help her develop the ability to handle new people and situations in a calm and composed manner, as well as help her develop a healthy mindset. Continued socialization is also critical for Genie as she has spent her first year with limited interactions. Providing Genie with opportunities to interact with other people and other animals in a controlled manner will help her develop essential skills that could not be established while chained up. Training will be an essential piece of this process, as it will not only help Genie learn to develop a healthy bond with her family, but it will also help her develop the skills needed to be a good canine citizen. Fortunately, Genie has already learned many of her basic commands. Further practice will help her develop the stability needed to meet with success. With some heavier GSD specific traits, such as herding and guarding of property, Genie is a young girl who is looking for a safe and loving family. It is important that her new family understands the needs of the breed. If Genie sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet her today.

Updates:

Genie has been with us for several months and is doing very well. Her horrible beginning thankfully has become mostly a distant memory. She gets comfortable with new people and dogs at her own pace and you just have to go slow and be patient. The good news is that once Genie bonds to a person or dog, it is true love for her. Genie has become very bonded to us. We give her lots of love and affection and she returns it tenfold. Like most dogs, she does best with plenty of exercise. We take her on several long walks every day and she plays with our dog regularly. Genie can be reactive to strange dogs and people while on walks in our neighborhood. She has an instinctive need to protect the people she loves, even though they don’t need it. It seems to be fear-driven in part as she sometimes barks at strange noises or movements. When a stressor can be anticipated such as a strange dog walking toward us, it is best to shorten the leash, step off the sidewalk, have her sit and gently tell her “it’s okay.” This puts her focus on the handler and helps calm her down. Genie generally does very well on the leash, but she may pull and bark if she sees a dog, person or squirrel. With slow introductions she has recently done okay with house guests. Again, she has to be allowed to get to know new people at her own pace and she does best if they are sitting and don’t reach for her. She can be hesitant to get in the bathtub, but we have worked with her and she is doing much better. She does occasionally jump out, but I have definitely seen worse dogs. Beware: Genie is a persistent sock thief, clean or dirty LOL. She is very smart and will test boundaries. For example, if given the opportunity, she will jump up on the counter and try to take food. We have been consistent in correcting this behavior and she rarely attempts it with us anymore. She knows the word “no” and quickly responds by stopping the behavior. She plays great with our 2 year old male dog and 7 year old son (who is very experienced with dogs; see video). We are able to touch her bones and toys and pet her anywhere when she is playing or eating. Genie does not exhibit any resource or food guarding behaviors whatsoever. She loves all of us and is very affectionate and generous with her kisses. She will gladly roll over for a nice belly rub. She loves to curl up on the couch for a good snuggle. Genie is a great eater. She lets us clean her ears and Dremel her nails without any problems. She also loves to be brushed. All in all, she has made great strides with us and is a beautiful, wonderful dog. If Genie sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet her today!

Gender: Male

Color: Black & White
Current Size: 63 lbs
Ideal/Potential Size: 75 lbs
Housebroken: Likely
Obedience Trained: No
Altered: Yes

Good With Kids: Yes
Good With Cats: Yes
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Sorry Charlie, but it wasn’t your fault!  It’s not your fault your dander made your previous family sneeze.  We know a little something about Charlie, as he was an owner surrender due to one of the young family members developing severe allergies to him. Unfortunately, his (hopefully brief) stroke of bad-ish luck didn’t stop there, the shelter they took him too was overcrowded, so MAGSR stepped in to help Charlie.

As we learn more about Charlie, we do know he has done well in a household with all ages and family members, with both two legs and four!  He also did very well with testing with other dogs at the shelter, which is a good indication he would do well within a pack.  We believe Charlie is a typical young GSD who would need training in order to teach him manners.  As with all dogs, he would really benefit and  Charlie will absolutely thrive in a home where his family is either familiar with German Shepherds or is eager to learn about the temperament of the breed while providing the essentials - training, structure, boundaries, routines, and continued guidance.

Charlie would be an amazing addition to the family if a proper introduction and time to decompress is provided given all the movement and instability prior to arriving at MAGSR.  If Charlie sounds like the perfect addition to your family, please ask to add him to your family today!

DESCRIPTION:

Handsome Ghost was loved by his family. However, they felt that his energy and general care were too much for them to handle. So, they made the difficult decision to surrender him to a shelter hoping that he would find a forever family that would love him for a lifetime. Although shelter staff enjoyed Ghost, they knew that he would have his best chance at meeting with success if he moved into a breed specific rescue. When MAGSR heard that Ghost needed a place to move forward, we put plans in place to move him forward.

Ghost is a handsome, energetic, and playful guy. He can be a little timid with new people; however, if given time to adjust he enjoys the company of his people. He loves attention and snuggles once he knows you are safe. A big fan of toys, Ghost knows what toys are and is happy to play with someone or on his own. He is hoping his forever family has a nice supply of toys to explore.  As a young guy, Ghost will thrive with a family that will provide him with structure, routine, and leadership. Daily exercise is necessary as this will not only help him exercise his body but also his mind. Although Ghost has been socialized with people and other dogs, he does still need to learn some manners. Training will go a long way for Ghost. Not only will it help him develop a strong and healthy bond with his family, but it will also help him grow into a good canine citizen. Ghost is looking for a toy loving family that will commit to him for a lifetime. Could that be with you?

DESCRIPTION:

Sweet Sasha was living in a home but was left in her crate 24/7 other than for breaks to go outside to the bathroom. She kept her crate clean and was sweet as can be, but remained living this way for too long. Recognizing that Sasha deserved more, she was surrendered to another rescue who gave her the chance to socialize with other dogs and people. They quickly discovered that this little lady loves dogs of all sizes. She is social and outgoing with her furry friends. Although they quickly fell in love with Sasha, due to an overwhelming number of dogs needing placement, Sasha was transferred into MAGSR's care so that we could find her a forever family.

Sasha is sweet, social, and a joy to be around. Although she lived in a home, she was not given many opportunities to be out and about in the household. Sasha will likely need a little time to adjust to rules and expectations of living in a home. However, she already has a good start as she is crate trained and does understand the joys of regular meals and loving people. Sasha will thrive in a home that provides her with the structure, routine, and leadership that all dogs crave. Training will also go a long way with Sasha. Not only will training help her develop a life-long bond with her family, but it will also help her become a good canine citizen. Sasha is looking for a family that enjoys playtime, cuddles, and plenty of giggles. If Sasha sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet her today!

DESCRIPTION:

Mr. Herman is a beautiful, mild-mannered, somewhat quiet and timid gentleman from the south. We know little about Herman, as he was an owner-surrender due to their inability to properly care for and intervene with his separation anxiety and fearfulness of younger humans.  Unfortunately, all of this commotion has left poor Herman very confused, and as a result, he seems to be a little quieter than usual.  As days pass, Mr. Herman is slowly realizing he is being cared for and is beginning to come out of his shell.  So far, this young and healthy fella has been wonderful with other dogs, adults and older children who understand boundaries.

As with any young GSD, Herman would do very well in a home with a person or family who is familiar or is eager to teach him the ways of a true GSD by implementing structure, boundaries, routines and consistency.  He is learning the ropes of what is required to be an obedient side-kick, how to walk nicely on a leash, and basic manners, but could use the structured training and continued guidance of how a GSD gentleman from the south should act!

Herman does love the attention and respect, and would be happy to show you he can be a good boy,  but doesn’t want you to miss any time spent with him. For that reason, he will need to be safely tucked away if you plan to leave, possibly with a mind-blowing puzzle of treats to hold him over until you’re able to snuggle him again!

Herman would thrive in a home with a person or family who is familiar with or is eager to learn the ways of a true GSD - structure, boundaries, routines and consistency.  Herman would be eternally grateful for the rescue, love and structure. In return, your face will be adorned with mostly sloppy kisses and a shadow in the shape of a handsome GSD. If this sounds like the perfect companion to your household, then ask to meet Herman today!

Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 2 years 11 months
Color: Black & Tan
Current Size: 81 lbs
Ideal/Potential Size: 90 lbs
Housebroken: Likely
Obedience Trained: Working on it
Altered: Yes

Good With Kids: Yes
Good With Cats: Yes, but will chase
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Handsome Motley was picked up as a stray at the end of the summer and brought to a local shelter where he tested positive for parvo. Fortunately, he was transferred to an emergency vet quickly, and he received the life-saving care he needed. As a parvo survivor, Motley is a superpup, he can never contract the disease again.

Having survived, it seemed that things were looking up for Motley. He was placed in a loving foster home through the shelter and started training. While working through training, his foster family noticed that Motley was uncomfortable when getting into a sit position and asked the shelter to look into things. Recognizing that Motley deserved every chance at an incredible life, the shelter had Motley checked out and discovered that he has hip dysplasia. Although hip dysplasia can often be kept in check with diet, balanced exercise, joint supplements, and thoughtful play options, there are also cases where surgery is needed. Knowing that Motley deserved the best, the shelter began looking for rescue placement to ensure that Motley could get the care he needed to move forward. MAGSR knew Motley was special and welcomed him to the family.

Motley is a sweetheart. He is friendly, affectionate, and interactive. He enjoys the company of his people and other animals. Motley's foster family did have kids, dogs, and cats. Motley was adored by everyone, but he was known to chase the cats. Motley is looking for a forever family that will provide him with the structure, routine, and leadership that all shepherds crave. This will help him develop into a stable and balanced canine citizen. Our team is working with our amazing vetting partners to ensure that Motley gets any additional care needed to address his dysplasia. Donations toward Motley's medical care are needed. Please consider donating to Motley's care as this will not only help him move forward, but it will also help us continue to support medical dogs in need. As we learn more about Motley's plan, we will provide updates. Motley is looking for a forever family that will cherish him for a lifetime. Could that family be you?

Ema

Ema

Gender: Female
Breed: German Shepherd Mix
Approximate Age: 2 years 9 months
Color: Cream
Current Size: 50 lbs
Ideal/Potential Size: 50 lbs
Housebroken: Working on it
Obedience Trained: No
Altered: Yes

Good With Kids: Unknown
Good With Cats: Unknown
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Ema was confiscated due to cruelty and neglect. She and several other dogs were left outside in kennel runs filled with filth. Clearly underweight, needing medical care, and safer circumstances, Ema and her buddies were removed from the property. Although Ema began to receive the care and attention she deserved, it was felt that due to overcrowding at the shelter Ema would likely be most successful in finding her forever family if she moved into a rescue. When asked if we could help Ema move forward, MAGSR immediately put plans into place to welcome her to the MAGSR family.

Ema is a sweet, happy-go-lucky girl. Even though she has survived cruelty at the hands of her previous owner, she still enjoys the company of people. Affectionate and playful, it is impossible to be in her presence without smiling. As Ema has not lived inside a home, the rules and expectations of living in a household will be new. However, Miss Ema is more than ready for a new challenge. As is true of all young dogs, Ema will thrive with structure, routine, and leadership. She is also hoping that her new family enjoys cuddles. Training will go a long way with Ema. Not only will it help her develop a healthy bond with her family, but it will also help her develop into a good canine citizen. Ema is looking for a family that will love her for a lifetime, could that be with you?

DESCRIPTION:

Athena Mae and her buddy, Laika, were surrendered to a local shelter as their family felt they could no longer afford the girls. Recognizing that the girls would be most successful in finding a forever family through a rescue, shelter staff began reaching out to GSD rescues to see if they had openings. As many rescues have been sitting at or near capacity this year, finding placement wasn't easy. However, shelter staff kept up the search and kept the girls safe and loved until they found placement. We welcomed the girls to the MAGSR family for the holiday season this year.

Athena Mae is a friendly and interactive girl. She has clearly been well socialized around people and is happy to meet everyone around her. Full of energy and curiosity, Athena Mae moves about checking out the world around her. Most successful with a calm and confident handler, Athena Mae enjoys clear structure and routine as this helps her read situations appropriately.  Although Athena Mae lived in a home prior to her arrival, we do not know much about her previous life. As is true of any new dog, Athena Mae will need time to adjust to her forever home. She will be most successful in a household that provides her with the structure, routine, and leadership that all GSDs crave. Opportunities to effectively burn her energy and challenge her mind will be needed on a daily basis. Athena Mae is developing new skills every day with our volunteers and seems to enjoy the opportunity to learn. Training will go a long way. Not only will it help Athena Mae develop into a good canine citizen, but it will also help her develop a strong, healthy bond with her forever family. This girl cannot wait to find a forever family of her own. If she sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet Athena Mae today.

Obedience Trained: No, I'm a puppy!

Good With Kids: Yes

DESCRIPTION:

Lovely little Sadey was surrendered to another rescue in the south as her owners felt that they could not provide her with the care that she deserved. Although Sadey was clearly being well cared for while with the other rescue, due to an overwhelming number of dogs needing rescue support in their area, they asked to transfer Sadey into our care. We were happy to welcome Sadey to the MAGSR family.

Sadey is a social and intelligent little lady. She enjoys the company of her people and other animals. Currently living in a foster family with children and two big dogs, she has snuggled her way into the hearts of every member of the family. Although Sadey is still a baby, she is making huge strides adjusting to the rules and routines of living in a home. Her housebreaking is coming right along, she is sleeping through the night, and keeping her kennel clean and dry. A playful girl, Sadey understands the importance of toys and can often be found chasing around a ball. Active and intelligent, Sadey picks up new skills daily and seems to be a great problem solver. Although Sadey's foster family is already taking important steps toward socializing her, it is critical that her forever family continue this process. Training will also go a long way with Sadey as it will help her develop into a stable and confident adult dog. Sadey is absolutely adorable; however, it is important that Sadey's forever family remember that puppies are a lot of work. They will whine, chew on inappropriate things, have accidents, and fill your home with puppy antics. With structure, routine, and leadership, Sadey will develop into the good canine citizen we know she is destined to become. DESCRIPTION:

Sweet Shep was picked up as a stray in the south and brought to a shelter in the south. Although staff at the shelter do everything they can to help the dogs in their care, with an overwhelming number of dogs arriving on a daily basis, they are unable to keep up. Recognizing that Shep was a special guy who deserved every chance to find a forever family, a plea for rescue help went out. When we heard that Shep needed help, we immediately put plans into place to help this guy move into the MAGSR family.

Shep is friendly, playful, and affectionate. He enjoys the company of his people and brings happiness to everyone around him. Good with dogs, Shep is happy to hang with a pack or be the sole focus of the family. Although we don't know much about Shep's past, we do know that he has a bright future. Living in an amazing foster family, Shep is learning the ins and outs of living in a home. He seems to already have a good understanding of the comforts of living in a home and absolutely loves to snuggle in with the pillows. He also seems to be house broken and crate trained. As is true of all dogs, Shep will thrive with structure, routine, and leadership. He is looking for a family that will also take him to training. Training will help Shep further develop his good canine skills. It will also help him develop a healthy, lifelong bond with his forever family. If sweet Shep sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet him today!

Updates:

Things are going well with Shep. He is a nice boy.  Shep is good about letting us know when he needs to go out. Trying to get him to use the bells like our dogs do. Anyway, he is going to make a wonderful addition to someone’s home. Super affectionate, so endearing, loves to snuggle, generally pretty good on leash, will sit, agreeable about going into his crate. I have been crating him an hour or so during the day ‘just because’ and also having him sleep in cage late night to morning. We gave him a bath yesterday which he begrudgingly admitted felt good. He is also friendly to people who have stopped by and also with 5 grandchildren separately meeting him, ages 4-14. I believe he might have a pretty healthy prey drive as he is obsessed and so focused if seeing a yard squirrel or chipmunk. He’s really a sweet guy.

DESCRIPTION:

Just like any enlisted personnel, Sarge hasn’t had an easy go of the beginning of his furry life: In December he was found wandering the streets searching for his human.  Knowing the streets weren’t a place for his gorgeous Sable GSD, kind Samaritans brought him to a local rescue in hopes he would be claimed.  When no one came forward to claim him, and he continued to show fear of male staff and volunteers, it was determined he was clearly mishandled and the best move for him would be to place him in foster with a “Sarge Trusted-and-Approved” female volunteer.  Mid-December his journey continued, and he was with his first foster until the end of January. Unfortunately, Sarge had to move to a second foster home after emergency surgery to save his life due to severe complications from his neutering just a few days prior.  During his recovery in his second foster, he did very well with the resident female dog after proper introduction and time to acclimate.

Thankfully his second foster-mom knew exactly what he needed, and as hard as it was for her to seek a way to get him to MAGSR, she did.

What we’ve learned about Sarge is that not only is he strikingly HANDSOME, but he is working diligently on being a very good boy!  He’s working on building confidence and trust which will help him work through his fear of some male humans.  As with all good GSD’s, he is eager to please.  In general, Sarge is more of the follower, and once he warms up, is looking for a pack leader in all senses, (if you’re familiar with Army Rankings, he’s looking for his ‘Command Sergeant Major!).  He has no hesitation getting into cars for a ride, and enjoys the ride, but will get very anxious if you try to leave him behind - as they say in the military - “LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND” he expects you to exercise this essential value.  But who wouldn’t love a velcro pooch as gorgeous as Sarge by their side 24/7?  Oh and if you’re having trouble coaxing him to do anything, Sarge will be eager to please for some Cream Cheese!

Sarge will absolutely thrive in a home where his family is either familiar with German Shepherds or is eager to learn about the temperament of the breed while providing the basic essentials - structure, boundaries, routines, guidance and training. As previously mentioned, Sarge was in foster care with another dog, and has the potential to be an amazing addition to the family if a proper introduction and time to decompress is provided given all the movement and instability prior to arriving at MAGSR.  If Sarge sounds like the perfect addition to your Platoon/Company a.k.a. Family, please ask to enlist your family to the life of Sarge today!

Sweet little Brooke was surrendered to a shelter in the south. Although it was clear that Brooke was a sweetheart, she was so scared at the shelter that she had shut down completely. Recognizing that this little girl would not find her forever home if she remained in the shelter environment, a plea went out for help. When we heard about Brooke's situation, we knew we needed to step forward and welcome her to the MAGSR family.

Brooke is a lovely little girl. She is petite and curious. However, due to a lack of socialization with new people, new environments, and new animals prior to her arrival in MAGSR's care, she can be hesitant in new situations. Brooke is fortunate to be living with an incredible foster family that is working hard to provide her with the opportunity to socialize with new people and other animals. However, it is critical that Brooke's forever family continue this socialization. Brooke is looking for a forever family that will provide her with the structure, routine, and leadership that all dogs crave. Training will go a long way with Brooke. DESCRIPTION:

Sweet Freddie was picked up as a stray and brought to a shelter in southern Virginia. Found at a local elementary school playing with all the children on the playground, everyone knew that Freddie was a special guy. Although they did everything they could to help him move forward, unfortunately, the shelter that he arrived at lacked the resources to meet his needs. As a result, dogs with medical needs, like Freddie, often do not receive the care and attention they need. Recognizing that Freddie needed more than they could give, shelter staff immediately began networking Freddie hoping a rescue could step in to help. When the shelter reached out about Freddie, our team immediately started working together to find a loving foster home for this handsome guy. Freddie, like so many seniors, had limited options at the shelter, but he deserved the dignity of living out his golden years in comfort and safety. We are excited and honored to be able to step up and welcome Freddie into the MAGSR family.

Freddie is a sweet, interactive, and intelligent guy. It is highly evident that somewhere along the lines he was socialized with people and other animals. Although we do not know anything about his past, we are excited about his future. Freddie is living with a loving and experienced foster family that has welcomed many seniors over the years. He is enjoying the comforts of a loving home, regular meals, and a warm bed. Still learning the ins and outs of his current home, Freddie is adjusting to the new routines. He will need time to adjust to his forever home as well. As is true of GSDs of all ages, Freddie will thrive in an environment that provides him with structure, routine, and leadership. Training will go a long way for this guy. Not only will it help him develop a strong and healthy bond with his forever family, but it will also help him develop into a good canine citizen.

Having joined the rescue family, we have been able to begin providing Freddie with the vetting care he has needed to move forward. Unfortunately, we have learned that Freddie is heartworm positive. This prognosis could have been avoided if Freddie's family had kept him on preventatives. Although treatment is expensive, this social guy is beyond worth the cost. Freddie's entire heartworm treatment will be covered by MAGSR. Donations toward his care are greatly appreciated as this will help us not only help this handsome guy but they will also help us continue to support medical dogs in need. Freddie will need to take it easy over the next couple months while he completes his treatment. However, this will help him develop a healthy bond with his forever family. If Freddie sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet him today.

Pups don't get much sweeter than Miss Candy. This lovely little girl was surrendered to a shelter in the south where she tested positive for parvo. Fortunately, the right people got involved and Candy received the lifesaving care she needed to survive. While recuperating at the vet in the south, it was noticed that Candy has some vision loss. She is able to see some items directly in front of her; however, her periphery vision is impaired. It is thought that this may have been a side effect of parvo. Knowing that this special girl would be most successful if she found rescue placement, a plea went out for her. When we heard about her situation, the MAGSR team stepped into gear and began making plans to welcome her to the family.

Candy is friendly, affectionate, and playful. A happy girl, Candy is well socialized with people and other dogs. She keeps everyone around her smiling with her puppy antics. Current Size: 70 lbs
Ideal/Potential Size: 70 lbs

DESCRIPTION:

Maize is finding her way through this crazy maze we humans call life, and unfortunately through the twist and turns, has found herself at a temporary dead end. Her former family loved her, but had a life changing event that has left this smart, calm, obedient, perfectly trained, and stunning girl in the care of MAGSR.

We are excited to share what we know about Maize, and let us tell you - she is AH-MAIZE-ING!  Her history reads more like an Ivy-League education too!  She began her training with the breeder, Haus Juris, and finished her most recent training with Diamond Kennels. Since Maize was properly bred and has good bloodlines, she has an incredible temperament, is calm and possesses the traits of an absolute gem of a GSD.  Her training was proactive and not to address any particular behavioral issues. While at the vet and outside the home, she has 5-star behavior without the aid of sedation or muzzling and often was paid many compliments. There are no concerns of aggression towards humans, nor are there concerns with other dogs.  She is house trained (will cue by sitting near the door for a break), crate trained (responds to Kennel) and so much more. I suppose you can say the only issue that has been reported was Maize’s puzzlement of a rouge plastic bag flailing in the dark of night.

Maize’s extensive training really shines while you’re out on a walk showing this beauty off - she will maintain your pace and obey every command, with her attention split between the smells or things around her and the owner during walks. Maize is a joy with strangers and does not often jump on her own accord (it’s hard for some of us humans not to ask for a hug from this stunner!).  She often does pay close attention when dogs (sometimes hackles go up) and people pass by, but that attention to both is clearly due to interest rather than territoriality or aggression. As having been properly socialized while she was a puppy, neighborhood dogs have routinely approached and she has displayed playfulness on every occasion and just wants to make friends. Maize has also been fully desensitized to loud noises, city noises, and the like and has never shown any alarm with cars driving by, honking, etc.

As if all that wasn’t enough already, Maize's best qualities are her gentle and loving personality, goofiness, physical fitness, general obedience, but also, her complete lack of aggression and mischievous behavior. Maize really does care about being a good dog and wants to please her owners. The only thing she needs to work on would be to help her manage her small bit of anxiety and excitement - this has been noted to happen sometimes in the car when she doesn’t know where we are going and is sometimes a bit over-excited home greetings.

As with any beauty, Maize enjoys days at the spa, and LOVES being brushed in-between spa days!  As with all German Shepherds, Maize will continue to grow and flourish when provided with the essentials - structure, boundaries, routines, guidance and training. If she sounds just as AH-MAIZE-ING to you as she does to us, then please find your way to MAGSR and ask to see Maize today!

Nova was picked up as a stray in the south and brought to a shelter. Although she waited patiently for her family to come and claim her, no one came. Staff at the shelter fell in love with this sweet girl; however, due to an overwhelming number of dogs at the shelter, Nova was on borrowed time. Fortunately, the right people heard about Nova and started working together to find her a safe spot within the MAGSR family. We were able to help Nova move forward in the nick of time.

Nova is a friendly, affectionate, and curious girl. As a young GSD, she is active and intelligent. It is important that Nova's forever family provide her with daily opportunities to exercise both her body and her mind as this will help her develop into a stable adult. Nova will thrive in a household that will provide her with the structure, routine, and leadership that all GSDs crave. Although we do not know anything about her life prior to her arrival at the shelter, it is clear that Nova was well socialized with other people and other dogs. It is critical that Nova's family continue to socialize her in controlled settings. When temporarily fostering with one of our volunteers, Nova seemed to have some knowledge of the rules of living in a home. She goes to the door when she needs to use the bathroom and crates well. She also seems to understand the importance of a comfortable bed and quickly gravitates to a dog bed or even the couch. As is true of any new dog, Nova will need time to adjust to the rules and routines of her forever family. However, she is more than ready to learn. Training will go a long way for Nova. Not only will training help Nova develop a strong and healthy bond with her forever family, but it will also help her develop into a good canine citizen. Updates:

The great things:

Fully housebroken

Almost always silent.

Sleeps in her crate through the night

No separation anxiety that we've noticed

LOVES soft, fluffy beds

She has done great getting to know our other dog and sharing spaces together

Does not chew on or have any interest in non-dog toys (i.e. shoes, furniture, coats, etc.)

Walks well on a leash. No leash reactivity that we've noticed

More food motivated than toy motivated

She knows basic commands (sit, down, off, out, come, place)

She does very well with the "out" command when you want her to leave something alone

She also does well with "gentle" when you want her to not be rough with a toy or another dog

She obeys the "place" command pretty consistently

No resource guarding (food, toys, or people) that we've noticed

She enjoys car rides and does not get car sick

She did great going to Lowes on a little adventure and got lots of attention from other people in the store.

She's done great with not trying to eat people's food off of plates or jumping on the counter (she has not jumped on the counters at all). But she will need those behaviors reinforced because she is curious of the smells coming from the counter/plates. This has been easily corrected with the "out" command when she does get curious.

She's pretty sensitive to changes in tone of voice. So if she's not listening and you tell her a bit more sternly and/or lower tone she usually snaps to attention.

Things that need work:

Needs work on consistently obeying basic commands like sit and come. She knows what they mean but doesn't always obey the first time.

She needs practice getting comfortable having her collars put on. She doesn't mind the collars really but seems to be a little cautious of people putting them on. Nothing aggressive, more of a "do I really have to wear this" sort of pathetic face.

We have not tested her in direct contact around children, but based on passing them in the park she has no reaction to them at all. This would still need to be tested and always monitored closely.

Thor

ADOPTED 02/22/2023!

Thor
ThorThorThorThorThorThorThorThorThor
Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 5 years 10 months
Color: Black & tan
Current Size: 97 lbs
Ideal/Potential Size: 95 lbs
Housebroken: Yes
Obedience Trained: Working on it
Altered: Yes

Good With Kids: Unknown
Good With Cats: Likely
Other Dogs OK: Unknown
DESCRIPTION:

Thor is on an adventure in search of his ‘superhero’ family! We know a little about Thor, as he was an owner-surrender due to an unpredictable change in the household.  It was a very difficult decision for the family because he is a super dog, but they wanted to do what is best and brought Thor to us.

As a typical GSD, Thor is eager to please! He doesn’t always wear a cape, but when he does, it’s usually under a blanket on a couch next to you after a long walk, some play-time (catching bad-guys) so he can rest up for the next adventure.  Thor has lived with a toddler and is good with other dogs with the same focus - catching bad guys (possibly the evil squirrel that wrecks your lawn)!

Thor loves his ‘super’-humans and wants to make sure his ‘superhuman’ family doesn’t emBARK on adventures without him, so he will need to be safely tucked away, possibly with a bad-guy defying puzzle of treats! Also, because Thor is a crime-fighting (squirrels) pup, he can sometimes have a delay in warming up to ladies - after all aren’t they all after him for his good looks?  He is a heart-breaker if you’re not careful!

Thor would thrive in a home with a family who is familiar or is eager to learn the ways of a true GSD - structure, boundaries, routines and guidance.  Thor will return the favor of being saved with superior loyalty…(mostly sloppy kisses and a shadow in the shape of a handsome GSD), if this sounds like the adventure you would like to emBARK upon, then ask to meet Thor today!

Loverboy (L.B.)

ADOPTED 02/19/2023!

L.B.

Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 4 years 2 weeks
Color: Black & Tan
Current Size: 65 lbs
Housebroken: Unknown
Obedience Trained: No
Altered: Yes

Good With Kids: Older Kids Only
Good With Cats: Unknown
Other Dogs OK: Yes
DESCRIPTION:

Handsome L.B. was picked up as a stray and brought to a shelter in the south. Although he was as friendly as can be, L.B. had hair loss, was emaciated, and tested positive for heartworms. A local rescue recognized that L.B. was a special guy that needed more care than the shelter could provide. As a result, they pulled L.B. with the hope that they could start his road to recovery while looking for a breed specific rescue that would find L.B. an amazing forever family. When we learned that L.B. needed help with the next step of his journey, we welcomed him to the MAGSR family.

L.B. is a sweet, endearing, and lovable guy. Although we do not know anything about his past, it is evident that at some point he was well socialized with people and other dogs. As is true of all GSDs, L.B. will thrive with structure, routine, and leadership. He is hoping that his forever family enjoys long walks, playtime, and plenty of snuggles. True of all dogs, training is critical for L.B. Training will not only help L.B. build a strong, healthy bond with his forever family, but it will also help him develop into a good canine citizen. L.B. has waited patiently for his forever family. Could that be with you?

Updates:

I walked L.B. (Loverboy) on Sunday.  He was easy to leash up, loves treats, loves to follow his nose, and is a good looking youngster.  He is friendly, saw no reaction to other pups, jumped into the back seat of my car, without treat, and knows "sit".  Threw a paw in there when chicken was involved but that might have been accidental.  He does not appear to be interested in balls or other toys, but is still a fun companion, and will do a decent loose heel when prompted.  Just an all around friendly pup who needs to add a few pounds and  who will allow you to check his ears, paws and teeth and will throw in a few kisses to boot.

DESCRIPTION:

Beaker is a big, handsome guy who has moved around a bit lately. Although his most recent home hoped to keep him forever, it was discovered that he was a little too interested in the horses of the farm where he lived. In the interest of keeping him and the horses safe, his family decided that it would be best if he found a family with different circumstances. Wanting to ensure that Beaker found a safe and loving forever family, they surrendered Beaker to MAGSR. We promised we would find this big guy an amazing home.

Beaker is in many ways your typical GSD. He is intelligent, inquisitive about his surroundings, and observant. When first meeting new people he is friendly but takes a little time to let his full personality shine. However, given some time to adjust, Beaker enjoys a good lean-in and chin scratches. Although we do not know much about his past, we know that Beaker's future is bright. Beaker is looking for an active household that will provide him with the structure, routine, and leadership that all GSDs crave. He responds well to a calm and patient handler and seems to take cues nicely. Although he is still learning basic commands, Beaker is responsive and is likely to pick up expectations quickly. Training is critical to Beaker success. Not only will training help Beaker create a strong, healthy bond with his forever family, but it will also help him develop into a good canine citizen. DESCRIPTION:

Laika and her buddy, Athena Mae, were surrendered to a local shelter as their family felt they could no longer afford the girls.

Laika is a stunning lady. This intelligent girl enjoys the company of her people. Given clear direction and a confident handler, Laika is very responsive to the handler and quickly picks up new skills. Although Laika lived in a home prior to her arrival, we do not much about her previous life. As is true of any new dog, Laika will need time to adjust to her forever home. She will be most successful in a household that provides her with the structure, routine, and leadership that all GSDs crave. Laika is picking up new skills every day with our volunteers and seems to enjoy the opportunity to learn. Training will go a long way with this lovely lady. Not only will it help Laika develop into a good canine citizen, but it will also help her develop a strong and healthy bond with her forever family. DESCRIPTION:

Lovely Piper was confiscated by a local shelter as she, and another dog, were victims of medical neglect. Recognizing that both dogs needed help, the shelter got them to safety and began evaluating options. As the dogs needed a significant amount of care, rescue pleas were sent out. Piper's buddy found placement immediately. When we learned about Piper's needs, our team decided that she would be a great addition to the MAGSR family.

Piper's medical is extensive at this time. She arrived at the shelter emaciated, covered in flea dermatitis with open sores, unsteady on her feet, and carrying a baseball sized growth on her back leg. The shelter began the process of getting Piper comfortable and MAGSR has taken over her care. Our vetting team is working hard to address Piper's needs and ensure that she moves forward comfortably. Throughout this process Piper has been an absolute doll. She is gentle, affectionate and seems to adore anyone and everyone that gives her an ounce of attention. Although Piper has clearly been through a lot, she remains a sweetheart. Piper's care is expensive but she is beyond worth the cost. Please consider donating to Piper's care so that we can provide her with the medical support she needs while also helping other medical dogs.

Piper is a special girl. She is looking for a forever family that will provide her with the comfort, stability, and love that she deserves. Piper is a lovable girl who will bring endless snuggles to her forever family. If Piper sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet her today.

DESCRIPTION:

Sweet Fritzy once lived in a home with his owner. He enjoyed the life most dogs hope to lead. However, his life changed drastically when his owner became disabled and could no longer properly care for him. Fritzy was placed outside on the property but received little interaction, food, or vetting care. Underlying allergies began to plague Fritzy and his skin became inflamed. Over time this condition worsened, leaving Fritzy with open sores, infections, several areas of missing fur, and underweight. When a couple of good samaritans became aware of Fritzy's situation, they intervened by bringing Fritzy food, clean water, and needed socialization. Although they made Fritzy's world better, they knew that Fritzy needed more. We were contacted to see if we could move Fritzy into our care so that he could be placed in a safe and loving forever home. How could we say no?

Fritzy joined the MAGSR family and has begun to heal. Although he has a bit of a journey ahead of him, we are working with our vetting partners to help Fritzy move forward. With a plan in place, we are honored to have the opportunity to watch him heal and try new adventures every day. As is true of all GSDs, Fritzy is looking for a home that will provide him with structure, routine and consistency. This will help him decompress and build a strong and stable relationship with his forever family. Fritzy will benefit from continued socialization in a structured manner. This will help him continue to learn about the world around him. With time, patience, and a little TLC, we know he will be joy and endless smiles to his forever family. If your family is ready to welcome a new furry friend, ask to meet Fritzy. He can't wait to find a safe and loving forever home.

We promised Mikah's family that we would find her an amazing forever family.

Mikah is a young, active, and intelligent girl. She is quick to learn new things and responsive to the handler. Claire was picked up as a stray in the south. She was brought to an animal shelter where staff members immediately fell in love with this little love bug. Although staff knew that Claire was special and deserved a loving forever family, in an overcrowded shelter Claire didn't have much time. Good With Kids: Older kids, over 16
Good With Cats: No
Other Dogs OK: Yes, Females Only
DESCRIPTION:

Axel and his family - Gypsie, Jackie, Genie, Sally, and Birdie - are victims of cruelty and neglect.

Axel is a young, energetic, and intelligent guy. He is looking for an active and experienced household that will provide him with the structure, routine, and leadership that all shepherds need. As the only male in the family, Axel seems to have been mistreated more than the other dogs. He can be hand-shy and head-shy, particularly, when fast movements above his head are used. Coming from a situation with little opportunity for affection or interaction with the world around him, Axel is taking every opportunity to explore and enjoy life. He is quickly discovering that people can be kind. Once he knows that you are safe, Axel leans in for head rubs and attention. As is true of all young dogs, Axel will need daily exercise for both his mind and his body. He is already beginning to learn a few basic commands and seems beyond happy to work with his handler. As a food motivated and smart guy, Axel will be the star of training class. Continued training will be an essential piece as Axel moves forward. Training will not only help Axel develop a healthy bond with his family, but it will also help him develop the skills needed to be a good canine citizen. Continued socialization is also critical for Axel as he has spent his first two years with limited interactions. Providing Axel with opportunities to interact with other people and other animals in a controlled manner will help him develop essential foundational skills that he missed while chained up. Axel already seems to be very social with the dogs in his family. They all seem to seek him out for comfort.

We have discovered that Axel is heartworm positive. This diagnosis could have easily been avoided had Axel been provided with monthly heartworm preventatives. Although treatment is very expensive, this interactive guy is beyond worth the cost. Axel's entire heartworm treatment will be covered by MAGSR. Donations toward his care are greatly appreciated as this will help us not only help this survivor get all of the care that he needs, but it will also help us continue to support medical dogs in need. Axel will need to take it easy over the next few months while he completes his treatment. However, this will give him time to learn about the ins and outs of living in a safe and loving home. Axel is looking for a loving, structured, and experienced household. If he sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet him today.

The GA 6 have been an expensive rescue, but so worth it.  If you can help us donating to the cost of their care, it you be very much appreciated!

Updates:

Axel has made several strides over the last few months. Lucky to have been living in a loving home, Axel was able to complete his heartworm treatment in the comfort and safety of a household. He can now boast that he is heartworm free and ready to move forward. Crate trained and housebroken, Axel's time living with a family has clearly had a positive impact and helped him make significant strides. This is particularly significant for a dog that had never experienced the joy of living in a safe and loving home. Although still working on a few allergy related skin issues, Axel is moving forward and getting the care and support he needs to continue this process. As training is essential for all dogs, it was decided that Axel would benefit from a board and train situation where he can continue to learn about the world around him and develop a healthy response to new environments and items. Training will also help Axel develop into a stable and confident dog. Although training is expensive, we know that with a solid foundation in place Axel will continue to grow and develop critical skills that will help him moving forward. Please consider donating to Axel's training. Your donation will not only help us meet Axel's needs but it will also help us support other dogs with more significant needs as we move forward. Please watch for updates as Axel continues on his new adventure.

Axel has been with us in foster for more than a month now and he has really come out of his shell! Axel loves playing ball and long farm walks! Axel loves head scratches and being with his people! Axel is house broken and doing well with his basic obedience! He will soon be a graduate of a four week board and train and has absolutely rocked his training! Axel has continued to build confidence each and every day! Axel is a loyal guy who wants nothing more than to please his people. Axel could be an only dog but would not mind the company of a female friend. Axel should only be placed in a home with children 16 and over as little ones may make him nervous. If Axel sounds like a match for your family please apply now! --

Axel is doing great with us and Yuki — my wife calls him snuggle bunny.  He is calm and walks really well on a leash - and is non-reactive to other dogs (as long as Yuki does not go bananas, then he joins in with a half-hearted woof to be supportive).   He has played with Yuki’s BFF, an 8 month old labradoodle, and it was fine.  He loves to run in the backyard and to go on walks.  And he really loves his meals!
