non-MAGSR & Shelter Dogs Available for Adoption

The following listings show LOCAL available GSD or GSD mixes that are being surrendered by their owners or placed by their fosters.

This page is NOT for the 'selling' of dogs.

If you have inquired about any dog listed on this page and been asked for an "adoption fee" of any kind, that is not clearly stated in the listing, please contact us immediately at web@magsr.org and let us know.  As a dog rescue organization, we advocate rescue adoptions only.  In Addition, and for the same reasons, we require that all dogs listed on this page be spayed/neutered as a condition of their adoption.

These dogs are not part of the MAGSR program; we have not evaluated any of these dogs.  We list them here because they are special and deserve a second look - - and a second chance.  For more information on any of these dogs, please contact the listed party, not MAGSR.

If you'd like to have your dog posted here, please follow the instructions at this link. Donations are appreciated!

Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. If you aren't prepared to work with your dog through the adjustment period and beyond, please look no further. If you wont keep your dog if you move or as your family grows, please look no further. If you aren't prepared to nurse your dog back to health if he gets ill or if she needs surgery, please look no further.

Rescue dogs have been through so much - dumped in shelters or found roaming the streets. They have been abandoned, neglected, starved and possibly physically abused. They need TIME, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING and LOVE in order to succeed in their new homes. Sometimes it may take several months for a rescue dog to make the adjustment to your home and family. If you aren't 100% committed to making this work with your new dog, then please don't adopt. Any adopter of a rescue dog who has been through the adjustment period can tell you its worth it. No dog is perfect….just like no human is perfect. Please don't expect too much too soon from your new dog.

Kiwi
Kiwi
DESCRIPTION:

Kiwi is a lovable, cuddly, smart German Shepherd who loves to learn new tricks. She is mat trained and spent many hours in behavior training. We love her dearly and are sad to have to give her up but she growled at and snapped at (did not bite) one of my kids and thus we are forced to find her a loving new home that does not have children. If you don’t have kids and you are an experienced dog owner, you will love Kiwi. But she is not for a new dog owner. She requires a lot of consistency, limit setting, love, and attention. She truly is a great dog and we are so sad to have to remove her from our (overly chaotic) home. We only want her in loving capable hands and thus will require references and contact with your vet.

Lincoln Burgoon
DESCRIPTION:

Lincoln is a very sweet dog. We have enjoyed having him. Unfortunately he has severe anxiety that seems to have worsen over the last year or so. The anxiety mainly occurs when there are storms or Fireworks. He has some separation anxiety but walking him every day helps that. We have tried a variety of different approaches from the calming collar, leaving worn shirts of ours with him, tried crating him when anxiety worsened but he broke half a tooth which we had to have extracted. On the days his behavior is positive, we make sure we praise him and give him treats. Lately if there  are storms, he has destroyed door knobs with his mouth, he clawed or torn up a wooden door frame, damaged our child’s high chair. At this point we are worried he is going to hurt himself and/or our daughter will injure herself on the damaged items/furniture in our house. As far as his demeanor with people and children, he is wonderful. He has never ever shown any aggression to our daughter. In fact, we have worked very hard with our daughter to know how to approach a dog but sometimes she will come from behind him and tug on his tail; and he never has shown aggression. If anything, he just walks away from her. Of course we praise him for how he behaves with her.

DESCRIPTION:

Marlene is as smart as she is beautiful.  She has worked with a trainer and is very eager for guidance and wants to please.  Outside, she loves room to run and be active, while inside she is calm and very affectionate.  She is athletic and very treat motivated. She has been the perfect houseguest in her foster home in terms of housetraining and crate training.

While Marlene can be reactive when she meets new people and new dogs, if you give her a proper introduction and just a few minutes, she warms right up.  She has been fostered with cats and does well with them.  She hasn't been tested with young children.

Found as a stray in rural SC, her transition to big city life wasn't the smoothest.  Marlene needs an experienced and confident adopter because she is a fearful dog who tends to be reactive in situations she deems to be scary or chaotic.  She does really well in quiet, rural environments, but can also be successful in a more suburban environment with the right set up and active training/management.  This is not a dog who can live in the city as the pace and noise is just too stressful for her.

Marlene was significantly underweight when she was rescued, but was otherwise healthy.  She may have been a stray for some time, or perhaps neglected, but she has since put on close to 30 lbs and looks great.

This dog is a stunner and she is very loyal and sweet to her humans.  She needs a calm household with a patient adopter, who is willing to work with a positive reinforcement trainer to continue to build her confidence and manage her fear/reactivity.  If you're a fan of this majestic breed, you will know she is worth it!

Like most shelter dogs, Marlene may need a refresher on housetraining and crate training. We ask all of DC PAWS’ fosters to work on both house and crate training with their foster dog.

The adoption fee for this dog is $350.  If you are interested in adopting Marlene, please submit an adoption application at https://dcpawsrescue.org/adoption-info/adoption-application-dogs/

Max
DESCRIPTION:

Max is a really great dog with adults especially when given the right amount of exercise.  He is very loving and will follow you around the house to be by your side.  He is also loves to cuddle up next to you when night time comes.  When on the leash he will stay by your side when running and does a great job being still when getting a bath and being brushed.  Max does have some food/bone protectiveness.  Once the food is in front of him it is hard to get it away from him without him growling and when given rawhides he likes to be protective of them.  He is not this way though with any other toys and enjoys retreiving balls in the house when thrown to and playing tug of war with a rope.  Max does not get along great with other dogs especially smaller ones.  As stated earlier he has been attacked by two pitbulls when a puppy, but he has not had much exposure to other dogs outside of seeing them when running.  This is due to myself working long days all of the time.   I have to find Max another home due to the nature of my work with travelling and working the long hours (12-16 hrs a day) along with needing to find rent which is not friendly to larger dogs.  If there are any other questions with his history or how he acts please give me a call so we can discuss.
