Description

Sweet Angus was picked up as a stray and brought to animal control. Upon arrival it was clear that Angus had some medical needs that would require quick attention. Missing hair over a large portion of his body with open sores, it was obvious to shelter staff that Angus had likely been in some pain for a while. Although staff waited for Angus' family to claim him, no one stepped forward. Recognizing that Angus would be most successful if placed within a rescue, staff members reached out to MAGSR for help. We immediately welcomed Angus to the MAGSR family.

Although Angus is in rough shape, he has the sweetest soul. A lover of everyone and everything, Angus enjoys spending time with kids, adults, and other dogs. He is even good with cats. Unfortunately, we do not know much about his past; however, it is clear that someone helped him develop into a social guy. His lovely personality shines through even with all the pain he must be in. Our team is already putting things in place to help lessen Angus' pain and get him the care he needs. He is lucky to have been placed with a loving foster family who will continue to help Angus move forward. As is true of all GSDs Angus will be most successful in a household with clear structure, routine, and leadership. These are essential qualities of a GSD home. He will also benefit from training as this will help Angus develop into a good canine citizen. Angus is looking for a loving forever home that will commit to him for a lifetime. Could that be with you?

Description

Adorable Albus is one of 11 puppies and a mama that were part of a cruelty case within Maryland. Upon arrival, this sweet litter of pups quickly won over all the staff within the shelter; however,  they knew this family needed to move into the safety of a rescue immediately so they could move forward and find loving forever families.  When asked if we could help this litter of 11 babies and mama, team MAGSR stepped up and welcomed the Hogwarts family to the rescue.

Albus is a playful and active guy. He enjoys the company of other animals. Like his brothers and sisters, he is working on socialization and house manners. Fortunately, our Hogwarts puppies have a good start already as they are sweet and friendly pups who happily soak up all of the love and attention they can find. Living with amazing foster families, each of the Hogwarts puppies is starting to learn all of the important things they will need to know in order to develop into stable and confident adult dogs. Although puppies bring endless joy to everyone they encounter, please remember that puppies are a lot of work. Puppies will whine, chew, have accidents and fill your home with endless puppy antics. With time, patience, structure, and routine, they will develop into incredible dogs. If these babies sound like the right match for your household, ask to meet one of them today!

Updates:
Albus is a handsome pup in search of his forever home! He is going to be a big dog.  As a puppy he needs basic obedience and continued work for potty training, crate training and leash training.  He is very inquisitive and enjoys exploring and checking out everyone and everything!  He loves his Nylabones, stuffless stuffies, rope toys, treat filled kongs and snuffle mats! He really enjoys the company of other people and dogs.  I’m sure he would love a doggie sibling to play with!  He gets along well with his older foster sisters. Albus is currently working on potty training, crate training, sitting, and house manners. Albus loves to talk and makes noises often- ranging from little grunts and squeaks to barking. Therefore he would not be a great candidate for close quarter living.

Description

Sweet Mona Mi was picked up as a stray in a busy city and brought to the local animal shelter. Upon entering the shelter, it was clear that this little girl was in need of significant medical support. Emaciated, missing a significant amount of her fur, covered in scabs, and clearly in pain, Mona Mi needed help and quickly. Although shelter staff began putting care in place, they knew Mona Mi needed to be transferred to a rescue who could get this little girl the care she needed with a private vet. When asked if we could help Mona Mi move forward, we immediately welcomed her into the MAGSR family.

Having joined the MAGSR family, Mona Mi was moved to one of our vets in order to help her begin the healing process. It was determined that she had contracted demodex mange which had developed into a secondary skin infection. With a good exam, antibiotics, medicated baths, and fantastic vetting care, Mona Mi has made significant strides. She is feeling much more like a pup and ready to learn about the world. Although a little hesitant at first, when given a little time to adjust to new people and situations, Mona Mi is a ball of fun. She is full of life and ready to move forward. As is true of all young shepherds, Mona Mi craves structure, routine, and leadership. She has a lot to learn but is eager to start. It is critical that Mona Mi's forever family get her into training. Training is important as it will not only help her develop a strong, healthy bond with her family, but it will also help her develop into a stable and confident adult. Mona Mi is ready for her forever family. Could that be you?

Aspen is a love. Her family set her up for success by making sure she was well socialized, learned manners, and every opportunity to shine. They doted on her and she repaid them with unwavering loyalty and love. Aspen loves people of all ages. She is also a fan of large male dogs. In fact, she has been participating in doggy day care for years and has a blast with her buddies there. Having lived in a wonderful home for many years, Aspen understands the ins and outs of living in a household. However, as is true of any dog, she will need time to adjust to the new routine of her adoptive home. As a senior pup, Aspen definitely enjoys her walks and daily playtime, but she also enjoys a good nap and some quiet time as well. She is at an age where she has a nice balance of energy. Although Aspen has completed basic training, she looks forward to continuing to train with her new family. Kingston

Adopted: 08/25/2022!

Gender: Male

Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Approximate Age: 5 years

Color: Black & Tan

Current Size: 65 lbs

Ideal/Potential Size: 70 lbs

Housebroken: Working on it

Obedience Trained: No

Living with: Foster

History: Surrender to Shelter

Good with Kids: Older kids, over 16

Good with Cats: Unknown

Other Dogs OK: Yes

Description

Kingston was surrendered to a shelter by his owner who outwardly admitted that he was being abused in their home. Having survived a couple years of mistreatment, Kingston was, understandably, frightened and unsure. Although fearful and avoidant with men due to the abuse suffered at the hands of a man, Kingston was more accepting of and comfortable with female staff members at the shelter. However, it was very apparent to shelter staff that Kingston would be most successful if given the opportunity to move forward with a rescue that could provide him with the time, patience, and leadership needed to move beyond his abuse. Recognizing that Kingston deserved so much more than the life that he had escaped, several rescuers came together to network Kingston and help him move forward. MAGSR was honored to be part of the team that changed Kingston's life for the better.

Kingston is a survivor. He has endured pain and suffering without the voice to ask for help. The scars left by his previous owner are not very visible on the outside, but they have left him unsure and anxious with new people and situations. As a result, Kingston has needed time to decompress and develop trust in an experienced foster home. Handshy and head shy, Kingston's foster family has been slowly teaching him that people can be kind, gentle, and a source of love. He has been learning that a leash is not a tool for pain, a collar will not hurt, and that head scratches are truly amazing. This is a slow process, but every day, Kingston's foster family sees a little more of the goofy, playful, and affectionate boy that has been hidden by the trauma of his previous life. Daily opportunities to work with his foster family and adjust to living in a safe home are important for Kingston. He has adjusted well to being handled by his foster mom and is learning to trust his foster dad. Kingston's relationships with men will require some additional support as he continues to progress. With time, training, desensitization, and a chance to be a dog, Kingston is making important strides needed to move forward with a loving family of his own.

In addition to the physical abuse that Kingston endured, it is apparent that he was also neglected. Upon arrival, it was very clear that Kingston had medical needs that required immediate intervention. Struggling to defecate without shaking and screaming in pain, extremely uncomfortable with swollen and infected anal glands, itchy from a food allergy, in pain from frostbitten ears, positive for heartworms, and lacking energy due to a severe case of pneumonia, Kingston has needed significant medical support. Fortunately, one of our amazing vetting partners has worked with us to provide Kingston with everything he needs. Antibiotics have begun, pain meds have been administered, x-rays have been taken, and next steps are in place to ensure that Kingston's needs are met. Additional care will be needed over the next month or two to ensure that Kingston is healed and healthy. Kingston's medical needs are expensive but he is more than worth the cost. Please consider donating to his care as your donation will not only help us help Kingston move forward, but it will also help us continue to welcome dogs with medical needs into the MAGSR family.

Although Kingston is not yet ready to find his forever family, we know that when he is ready for his next step, a safe, loving, experienced and supportive family will be waiting for him. Kingston Could that be with you?

Willow

Adopted: 08/24/2022!

Gender: Female

Breed: German Shepherd Mix

Approximate Age: 7 years

Color: Black & Tan

Current Size: 66

Ideal/Potential Size: 60

Housebroken: Yes

Obedience Trained: Working on it

Living with: Foster

History: Abuse/Neglect

Good with Kids: Unknown

Good with Cats: No

Other Dogs OK: No

Description

Willow was abandoned by her family along with another dog. When it was discovered that the dogs were left on the property, they were brought to a local animal shelter for their safety. Although Willow waited patiently for a family that would commit to her for a lifetime, no one came forward. As shelter staff wanted to ensure that Willow found a safe and loving forever home, they began reaching out to breed specific rescues that would have the ability to move Willow forward. When asked if we could help Willow, MAGSR immediately welcomed her to the family.

Willow is an interactive and intelligent girl. As she has been abandoned and moved around a few times, it does take her a few minutes to adjust to new people. However, given a little time and some tasty treats, she warms up quickly. As Willow moves forward, consistency, routine, and leadership will help her thrive. She is looking for a patient and active household. Although Willow has lived with other dogs previously, she would likely be best as the only dog in the home. Willow, like all dogs, will benefit from training. Not only will training help Willow develop a strong and healthy bond with her forever family, but it will also help her develop into a good canine citizen. If this energetic lady sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet her today.

Updates:
Over the last month, Willow has made some excellent progress. She has settled nicely into the MAGSR family and has been a regular participant at events. As Willow has been working with a variety of handlers and getting out to play on a daily basis, she has gotten in shape and is ready for her summer wardrobe. Willow's sweet and well-balanced personality makes her an excellent candidate for many households. Equally happy to go out and about on a long walk or simply lounge around under a nice shady tree, this girl loves the outdoors and hopes her forever family does too. Treat and toy motivated, Willow is already learning basic commands. She has developed a good understanding of sit, down, and leave it with more commands on their way. When finished working she loves a little time to play with toys particularly the fun-filled ones that squeak. Willow is waiting patiently for her forever family but hopes they come for her soon. Could that family be you? , Willow has settled into her foster home nicely. She is housebroken and loves to sleep in her crate. She goes in by herself or when asked. She’s very sweet and very affectionate.   Willow loves interactions with humans but is somewhat aloof regarding dogs. She is a bit hesitant when approached by or approaching unknown dogs. She prefers a cautious approach and this can sometimes take several meetings. Jumpy or anxious dog make her nervous and she prefers not to interact with them. For the most part most dogs can sense Willow’s Alpha vibe and will bark at her even if she’s doing nothing but walking down the street. Recommend that she be an only dog, or with a non-dominant male companion dog of similar size (with proper introduction).   Willow is thriving with two 30 minute walks each day. Play time and training time. She’s learning touch and currently understands: sit, down, paw/shake, go find (finding food items that have been hidden by searching for them with her nose), hide and seek (finding humans in the house), go to the crate, go to your bed (she goes to her dog bed). She’s not much of a barker but will protect the house if she hears a strange noise. She’s very good in the car and loves to go out for car rides. Willow has a very high prey drive (or hunting instinct), therefore, during walks she is mostly engaged in searching for small critters such as squirrels, rabbits, etc. It is not recommended that there be small pets such as rabbits, ferrets, or dogs smaller than herself in the house. Willow tends to bolt when she sees squirrels and other small animals, therefore, it is not recommended that small children walk her due to her size and weight she can get loose and run off. We’re working on leash manners as she tends to be a heavy puller and requires a shorter lead to keep the pulling in check. We’re also working on getting her to pay more attention to the handler rather than to the critters and other distractions she encounters.   She has a few fears that we’re working on: afraid of vacuum cleaners (she’s made a large improvement in the time she’s been here), afraid of hair dryers, and thunder/lightning (slightly)   Willow is very smart, learns fast, is very willing to please and will test boundaries to see what she can get away with. Proper training and correction are advised. Considering all things mentioned she is a sweet girl with a great disposition, she’s past puppy antics and mature. She’s happy playing, working, walking or just hanging around and not needy or whiny and can entertain herself with her toys. She’s also a perfect size for a smaller home or limited living spaces. Most people we meet on our walks think she’s a puppy and are surprised to hear she’s four years old and won’t get any bigger. , Willow is progressing nicely. We have continued our twice daily walks modifying the times to avoid the excess heat. I’m pleased to report that we are at the five week mark and leash pulling has diminished considerably. We now have a considerably loose leash and a much more pleasant walk. In addition, our ‘critter progress’ has improved as well. Reactivity has lessened considerably.  At this point, the critter will grab her attention but she will continue walking and will not try to chase. I would say on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most intense reaction, Willow is currently at a 4-5 (where she was probably at an 8 or 9 one month ago). We’re still working on vacuum cleaner fear. She is now able to be in the next room (watching) while the vacuum is going and I have been able to get her to touch the vacuum while it’s off. Inside the house Willow is very obedient complying with whatever she’s told to do. Outside it’s a little more difficult because of all the distractions but she does well considering. She is also respectful of boundaries and does not go into areas where she knows she is not allowed to go. The relaxed environment, good food, and increased exercise have done her well. She now sports a beautiful shiny coat, her eyes are sparkly, and she has a much more relaxed demeanor. She has a lovely disposition and makes me laugh every day. She's going to make a fantastic family member for some lucky family. Think Willow might be the right fit for your home?  Apply to adopt today!

Description

The Hunger Games puppies - Peeta, Katniss, Thresh, Rue, Gale, and Finnick - were an accidental litter in the south. Although they were well-cared for as babies, as they grew, they became too much for their family. Recognizing that they were unable to provide a large number of babies with what they needed, their family surrendered them to a shelter. Unfortunately, with the overwhelming number of dogs needing placements in shelters right now, owner surrenders are the first dogs to be euthanized. The minute these babies entered the building they were in danger. Trying to do everything they could to keep this group alive, shelter staff began pleading for rescue help. When we heard about their plight, our team knew we needed to welcome the Hunger Games family to MAGSR.

Thresh is a playful and intelligent guy. He seems to enjoy cuddles just as much as his opportunities to goof around. As an active young pup, Thresh is looking for a family that can give him the time, attention, and training that will help him meet with success. Still a very young dog, it is essential that Thresh continue to socialize regularly. This will help him develop a stable and confident personality. Although Thresh is a handsome dude, please remember that puppies are a lot of work. They will whine, chew, have accidents, and fill your home with puppy antics. With time, patience, training and socialization, Thresh will develop into the good canine citizen that we know he is destined to be. Description

Fantastic Hermione (fka Fred) is one of 11 puppies and a mama that were part of a cruelty case within Maryland.

Hermione is a spunky baby who is full of smiles and loves human attention. Belly rubs are a favorite activity of hers and should, in her mind, be provided on a daily basis. Like her brothers and sisters, she is working on socialization and house manners.

Gale is an active and loving boy. He is thrilled to interact with his people and loves a good snuggle. As an active young pup, Gale is looking for a family that can give him the time, attention, and training that will help him meet with success. Still a very young dog, it is essential that Gale continue to socialize regularly. This will help him develop a stable and confident personality. Although Gale is an absolute love bug, please remember that puppies are a lot of work. They will whine, chew, have accidents, and fill your home with puppy antics. With time, patience, training and socialization, Gale will develop into the good canine citizen that we know he is destined to be. If this little darling sounds like the right match for your household, ask to meet him today.

Updates:
Gale's foster has nothing but good things to say about him. He’s doing good.  His leash manners are quite impressive.  The sit command is mastered.  He also waits pretty good.  Crate is not an issue, he goes in sometimes on his own.  Working on leaving him in the crate when he can’t see me.  A little drama with that but we will keep at it.  He’s also eating well!

Skeeter

Adopted: 08/15/2022!

Gender: Female

Breed: German Shepherd Mix

Approximate Age: 4 years

Color: Black, Tan & White

Current Size: 50 lbs

Ideal/Potential Size: 50 lbs

Housebroken: Unknown

Obedience Trained: No, I'm a puppy!

Living with: Kennel

History: Stray to Shelter

Good with Kids: Yes

Good with Cats: Unknown

Other Dogs OK: Yes

Description

Little Miss Skeeter was picked up as a stray and brought to a shelter a few months ago. Due to a wound of unknown origin Skeeter was placed in quarantine for a few months at the shelter. Although this can be very difficult for many dogs, Skeeter handled her quarantine very well and remained friendly and interactive. She was a staff favorite. Once released from quarantine, shelter staff decided that Skeeter would be most successful if she was placed with a rescue. This would give her the best chance at finding the perfect forever family. When asked if we could help Skeeter move forward, MAGSR immediately welcomed her to the rescue.

Skeeter is a friendly, interactive and energetic girl. As a young dog, she still has all the puppy antics that would be expected at her age. She is looking for an active household that will help her exercise both her mind and body on a daily basis. Skeeter is a social girl. However, it is critical that her family continue to provide her with socialization. This will help her develop into a stable adult. As Skeeter had been in quarantine for a few months, she did not have the opportunity to develop her leash skills. However, now that she has joined the rescue, our volunteers have begun to develop these skills. As is true of all dogs, Skeeter will benefit greatly from training. Training will not only help Skeeter build a healthy bond with her forever family, but it will also help her develop into a good canine citizen. Skeeter is looking for a forever family that will love her for a lifetime. Could that family be you?

Description

Marvelous Maverick was surrendered by his family to a shelter in the south. They stated that although they loved Maverick dearly, due to a significant change in circumstances, they could no longer care for him. Shelter staff recognized that Maverick was special right away, his charismatic personality easily won everyone over. However, due to what looked like a gunshot wound to his foot, they felt that Maverick would be most successful if placed with a rescue. When MAGSR learned about Maverick's story, we stepped forward and welcomed him to the family.

Since joining MAGSR, we have addressed Maverick's medical needs. He has made great strides and is now acting and moving the way a GSD should. Maverick is a happy and gregarious guy. His previous family provided him with a solid foundation as he has clearly been well socialized with dogs and people. As a young guy, it is important that Maverick continues to be socialized in appropriate settings so that he maintains his current skills. It is also essential that Maverick exercise both his body and his mind on a daily basis. Training will help with this piece. Not only will training help Maverick move forward and develop a healthy bond with his new family, but it will also help him develop into a stable and confident adult. Maverick is looking for a forever family that will provide him with the structure, leadership, and routine that all GSDs crave. If he sounds like the right pup for your family, please ask to meet Maverick today.
