Cyrus

Adopted: 12/02/2017!

Gender: Male

Breed: German Shepherd Mix

Approximate Age: 9 years

Color: Black, White and Brown

Current Size: 56 lbs

Ideal/Potential Size: 65 lbs

Housebroken: Yes

Obedience Trained: Working on it

Living with: Foster

History: Shelter

Good with Kids: Yes

Good with Cats: Unknown

Other Dogs OK: Yes, with proper introduction

Description

Cyrus is very puppylike. He does know how to sit and give paw. But he needs general obedience. He is a fun, smaller guy that would greatly benefit from group training so that he learns how to socially interact with other dogs.

He loves people. He loves to play fetch with a ball and is eager to explore new things. He likes car rides, is very food motivated and is eager to please his person.

He will need someone with patience and time to teach him right from wrong. Because he's a little grabby and hard on the fingers when it comes to taking treats, he might be better suited in a household without toddlers or very young children.

Updates:
Cyrus is progressing nicely! With regards to his behavior, he is learning what is expected and what is not permitted. He's a fun, charismatic, exuberant pup. We have been socializing him with Sherman (another MAGSR dog) and they get along quite well, reason being that Sherman is a calm, confident, socialized dog. This would be an ideal time for Cyrus to get into a foster home or adoptive home and to start obedience training as he is showing the wilingness to focus on commands and tasks. , Just recently, Cyrus’ manners have improved a lot and he is really showing signs of maturing. He is now being worked with another socialized, well balanced dog and behaving himself very nicely. He is also taking treats much better and his focus is continuing to improve. In addition to this, he was just recently introduced to several people he did not know including children and we are very proud of the way he conducted himself. , He is an awesome dog. He is happy to be with his people and a playful goofy puppy. He loves marrow bones with peanut butter and playing with toys in general. He also loves to give HUGS!  He does better in a vari-kennel as opposed to a wire crate. He has not had any accidents in the house.  We are working through his crate anxiety. We play music for him, have used lavender in the room to soothe him and calming treats bought at Pet Value and we have not had issues with him breaking out of our crate. He absolutely loves car rides and meeting new people! He does have some bad habits such as counter surfing but he easily corrects. He does still need strong guidance as he does tend to want to push him limits as he is a young male full of life!!

Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Approximate Age: 13 years

Color: Black & Tan

Current Size: 62 lbs

Ideal/Potential Size:

Housebroken: Yes

Obedience Trained: No

Living with: Foster

History: Shelter

Good with Kids: Yes

Good with Cats: Yes, with proper introduction

Description

Dasha found herself dumped at a shelter.  She is a gorgeous long hair 5 year old girl.  She has not had the best of care, her coat sparse, full of dirt and fleas.  She has some hair loss, a skin and ear infection from flea dermatitis and poor nutrition.  She is now being well cared for in her foster home.  She has been treated for fleas and her skin infection and she is eating a high quality food with some supplements.  She needs to gain some weight and grow back some of her coat but she is beautiful regardless.  She enjoys playing with other dogs but can sometimes be bossy and pushy.  She would do best with a non dominant dog, as she wants to be the queen.

Updates:
I’m settling in at my foster-home with my foster brother. I love to cuddle, have my belly rubbed and my nose scratched. I love taking long walks and playing with my foster brother. At first I wasn’t sure about playing with toys but now I love playing with tennis balls. My foster Mom took me to the vet to get medicine to help fur grow back and now I look so much better and my fur is so soft. I’m gaining weight and getting better with basic commands but I still have a lot to learn.    , I’m doing great at my fosters house. My fur has all grown back and I had to have 6 teeth pulled because I wore them down so much. It doesn’t bother me at all that I have missing teeth you just have to hold you hand flat for me if you have a small treat. I love meeting new people when my fosters take me places with them and I love riding in the car. I’m doing better and better every day with my basic commands and I really want to learn more. My foster Mom say I look funny when I play fetch because I try to catch the ball with my paws and mouth at the same time. I can’t wait to find my forever home and to have someone to love! , I’m doing great at my fosters but I hope to find my forever home soon. I love kids and I’m good with cats. I love going on adventures, meeting new people (especially kids), playing fetch with my foster and with myself and playing with my fosters dog Jake. I'm good at walking on a leash and I’m getting better with my basic commands every day. I can’t wait to take a class so I can learn so much more.

We've had Trey for nearly a week and he has been great.  He gets along well with our resident dog as well as other dogs he met at a local park.  He has shown no signs of aggression, quite the opposite, his tail is in constant motion and loves attention and playing with our dog (we have no idea what he'll do around cats). He has taken to crate training nicely and there have been no accidents.  In his short time with us he has learned sit and is getting better about walking on a leash, he appears quite happy to be engaged with training.  All indications are he'll make a fantastic addition to your family.

Zale

Adopted: 11/24/2017!

Gender: Male

Breed: Belgian Malinois

Approximate Age: 10 years

Color: Tan & Black

Current Size: 54 lbs

Ideal/Potential Size:

Housebroken: Yes

Obedience Trained: No

Living with: Foster

History: Shelter

Good with Kids: Older kids, over 10

Good with Cats: Likely

Other Dogs OK: Yes

Description

Zale found himself in a shelter after being picked up as a stray. He is a very handsome young Belgian Malinois. Right now he is skittish and scared, which comes with all of the changes he has been through. He is being given time to adjust to his new surroundings. While Malinois' may look similar to German Shepherds they are not the same dogs. They are often times high energy requiring extended daily exercise and activities, they need ongoing training and socialization with people and other dogs. They are active, loving and enjoy having a job. Malinois' are not for someone who is looking for a laid back, couch potato. Zale will need a family that can meet his needs both physically and mentally.

Updates:
Zale is a very friendly guy. He is non aggressive to other dogs and friendly with all people. He hasn’t spent much time inside and is learning about stairs, doors and reflective surfaces. Despite this, his manners are pretty good - he lets you know when he needs to go out, was impeccable at the vet and will only chew on his dog toys. He is a high energy boy and wants to go go go! Yet he is also happy to climb into your lap for a shoulder hug and a few kisses. If you’re looking for a hiking or running partner and want a loving companion- Zale is you dog!! , Zale has been introduced to many new things and has proven to be curious and not reactive. He has met kids, big and toddler size, cats and very small dogs; he has been to the pet store and behaved impeccably; and he has good leash manners and has mastered the “release” command. Everyone who meets him says he is beautiful, sweet and love his hugs and kisses. He likes to chew and needs options so he doesn’t pick the wrong thing to chew like his dog bed. He crates well and is a quick learner. What is not to love about Zale?!

Good with Cats: Unknown

Other Dogs OK: Yes

Description

Sweet Otto made his way to us from a family that cared for him after he was dumped on their property.  We have no information about his past.  He is a very nice boy but very scared at this time.  Obviously all of the changes have him unsettled.  He is now in a caring foster home being provided with comfort and time to decompress.  Once Otto has settled in we will post updates.

Otto's foster reports that being in a home seems new to him.  He is frightened by the stairs and going through doorways.  He has no idea what to do with toys.  He has come out of his shell with one of the resident dogs, they enjoy romping around and playing.  His foster dad is working with him daily to help him become more confident.

Otto is continuing to make progress; he has mastered stairs and is getting calmer going through doorways.  He gets along well with the four large  GSDs in his foster home.  When Otto first arrived in his foster home, he would constantly hide in the back of his crate and had to be urged out for any activities. Otto has become much more confident over the last two weeks; he is comfortable wandering the house, taking walks around the property and prefers to nap in the corner of the living room rather than in his crate.  Over the last couple of days he started to play with chew toys and is taking tentative first steps playing fetch.  Although shy with new people, he is very affectionate and attentive with his foster.

Celia

Gender: Female

Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Approximate Age: 9 years

Color: Sable

Current Size: 100 lbs

Ideal/Potential Size:

Housebroken: Yes

Obedience Trained: Working on it

Living with: Foster

History: Shelter

Good with Kids: Unknown

Good with Cats: No

Other Dogs OK: Yes

Description

Celia found herself in a shelter after found wandering on her own. Her age is estimated at a year old but she could be younger. She is friendly and happy along with being beautiful. While at the shelter she kept her kennel area so she may be housebroken. Life on the run is no way to live, Celia wants the love and care of a family, a comfy bed, toys, exercise, good food and training.

Updates:
Hi I'm Celia!  I just love living in a house with comfy beds and chew toys. My foster mom always tells me what a good girl I am and how I have excellent house manners. I'm housebroken, I don't beg at the dinner table or jump on furniture, although I'm sure your bed would be very comfy.  I can be a little timid around new visitors, but give me a treat and pet me and I will be your friend.  I love spending time outside on the deck and going for walks, but I could improve my leash skills, although my foster mom tells me I've improved a lot (I'm working on my basic commands too).  Please ask to meet me!!  , Sweet Celia was returned to MAGSR thru no fault of her own. She lost her dad unexpectedly and her mom was no longer able to care for her and give her the time and exercise she needs. Celia is understandably confused right now and needs to lose a few pounds. Once Celia bonds with her human and gets comfortable, she becomes protective of her humans and her space. This can be easily managed by putting her away in a secure room and/or crate when people come to the home. She will also benefit from a strong leader, who has prior experience with the breed, and who will provide appropriate correction and training. Celia would like to find a forever home with a forever family who will commit to her and not give her up. Could that be your family? , I love my doggie beds, one in the living room where everybody sits, and one in the bedroom where my humans sleep. I like when my human comes home, I have my tail waggin', a happy face, and rub against them. I let my humans know when a car door shuts outside by running to the door and barking. I'm a little nervous around strange people, I do not like thunderstorms, I don't do well in crates because I figure out how to bust out of them. I do real good when I'm left with the range of the house. I like my Nyla-bone, and keep it by my bed in the living room and don't let the resident dog get close to it. I do good on walks, I let my humans know when I need to go out by jumping up, whining and leaning against them. I love ice cubes, and I roll over onto my back to get belly rubs. I bond very quickly with my humans and look forward to finding my forever home.

Obedience Trained: Unknown

Living with: Foster

History: Shelter

Description

April's life is forever changed, thanks to those who saved her from horrid and unsafe living conditions.  It is amazing that with all that April has endured she is so incredibly sweet and wants to be loved and properly cared for.  April deserves a family who will provide a wonderful life for her, one full of love and a commitment for her lifetime.

Updates:
Lovely April is a remarkable girl. Like many pups before her, April seems to know she has been rescued and will never be subjected to the horrible conditions from which she survived. She enjoys the company of everyone she meets and seems grateful to anyone who notices her. April tends to take most things in stride. Having to learn the ins and outs of a new home can be unnerving; however, April seems excited to have the opportunity to enjoy the good life. She has discovered the joy of a good bone, soft bed, and plenty of toys. Living with other dogs, April is slowly learning the ins and outs of pack life. We are very impressed with her playful nature. April is goofy yet affectionate. She will happily sit for as long as you'll allow while you rub her beautiful ears. If this amazingly girl sounds like a match for your family, please inquire about her today. , I have spent some time with April the last two Saturdays. Her behavior has been great both days.  Yesterday she patiently sat in her "run" while I leashed her up, even though another dog had been brought into the kennel area and they were all barking about it.  She is eager to please and knows quite a few commands, sit, down, an elementary stay, and come. It has been easy to get her attention. She takes treats gently, loves to have her ears rubbed and can be a leaner.  She has also been fine about other dogs being in her general area while we are out and about in the field. We are working on leash walking, she wants to pull ahead a bit, but no lunging. She is content to walk, work on commands, be brushed or just chill out by the picnic table.

Sherman

Adopted: 11/09/2017!

Gender: Male

Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Approximate Age: 14 years

Color: Black, Cream & Tan

Current Size: 94 lbs

Ideal/Potential Size: 105 lbs

Housebroken: Yes

Obedience Trained: Working on it

Living with: Foster

History: Shelter

Good with Kids: Unknown

Good with Cats: Unknown

Other Dogs OK: Yes

Description

Sherman came to us from a local shelter where he was surrendered. We are told that in his previous home, he was protective of his property and wary of strangers. When MAGSR took him in, he was a little detached and aloof. However, he's starting to come out of his shell and his personality is starting to shine. When he is with his favorite people, he is very laid back and pretty obedient. He really wants to please those he is closest to. He is starting to bond with his favorite handler and has been known to give kisses loves to shake/give paw for treats. He loves to go for rides in a vehicle and rides very quietly. He also likes riding on the motorized golf cart type vehicle which is used at the kennel. You can see him in attached photos lying on the front seat and in the rear cargo area. We also discovered he likes swimming with his handler which has allowed him to open up and bond as well as get some exercise. Just today, he was introduced to a very passive, calm female shepherd and he did very well with her. So as you can see, we have been introducing him to a lot of fun, new things and he is handling all of it well. He will need a confident, experienced handler as he is a big intimidating boy who needs to know that his human(s) have got the situation under control. We are extremely happy to see his progress and will update as we learn more about him.

Updates:
We are happy to report that Sherman is doing really well! He's become attached to his favorite handlers and lights up when he sees them. He's also been to the local Pet Valu and PetSmart to do some shopping. He's curious about all the smells and he conducts himself very well. He's also become very fond of the swimming pool at the kennel and shows no fear of it whatsoever. Just today, he spent some time with the white shepherd seen in the attached photos and he does well with her. He also spent time in the home of that shepherd's family and found a nice comfy bed to snuggle up on and take a nap.

Housebroken: Yes

Description

Sam is a very handsome 8 year old male GSD.  He has not been well cared for up until now, he is underweight and entered the shelter covered in fleas.  Life has changed for the better, he is now receiving good nutrition, he has been treated for the flea infestation and he is much loved by our rescue.  Now all that Sam needs is a family who will love him and provide proper care for his lifetime.  Please consider Sam for your family, he deserves a new start at a better life.

Updates:
Before writing Sam's update, I interviewed other family members to see what they have to say about Sam. ORHD aged 8: My favorite thing about Sam: he is sometimes funny when he steals pillows off of the couch and snuggles with them. If Sam had a human job it would be a boxer; no, the guy who shoots t-shirts out of the big gun at games and makes everyone cheer. Sam was very stinky when he came here but he smells better now. I hope his new owner likes to give dogs baths. He liked his bath. HLHD aged 8: My favorite thing about Sam: he brings back the ball when I throw it. Also, he ran into the wall his first night here. He thought a shadow was a door. He put his head in my lap and made sad sounds and let me pat him. If Sam had a human job, he would says hello to everyone at [LARGE DISCOUNT STORE] and marker people's receipts. He would act like the job is fun. Sam can be annoying because he never wants to just do nothing, but he is very nice and silly. I hope his new owner buys a lot of tennis balls. MSD aged 6: My favorite thing about Sam: he looks funny when I put underpants on his head and stick his ears out of them. He really, for real, likes hugs. Not like some dogs that you can hug, but they want to get away. If Sam had a human job it would be a clown or a hugger who hugs people that need hugs. I hope Sam's new owner hugs him and never forgets to feed him. Foster dad: My favorite thing about Sam is that he does not have a mean bone in his body. He is starting to listen to his name, "No, Sam." If Sam had a job it would be the guy who really wants to tell you about his religion at the Metro. I hope Sam's new owner is expecting an eight-year-old dog to have as much energy as our 4-year-old one does. Slinky (resident dog-neutered-male) aged 4: My favorite thing about Sam is that he is available for adoption. If Sam had a human job it would be: proctologist. I hope Sam's new owner feeds Sam enough. Even though he is annoying, he just wants to be friends, and no dog deserves to be starved - like Sam was. Update from foster mom: Sam is enjoying life with a family, although he is really struggling to be calm and relax. He spends a lot of time pacing and seeking attention. He is not destroying anything, although he really likes an old couch pillow, which we are letting him keep. He carries it around but hasn't torn it up or taken anything else that he should not have. Sam is very eager to please and responds to a sharp, no. He has had zero training and is starting to understand that he needs to "sit" to be served dinner. Sam is housebroken and he is fine when left alone at home in a crate - handled an 8 hour day without issue. He is dramatic and vocal when crated while his people are home because he wants to be with them. Sam has accepted that he is not permitted to be in the humans' beds or on the couch. He is having a harder time realizing that the resident dog doesn't like him "like that." That issue should improve after Sam is neutered. On a positive note, he accepts rejection well. Sam walks nicely on a leash. He has met a males and females of all ages and sizes and done well with a variety of personalities. He would likely do well with a bossy female or any dog that wouldn't meet his exuberance with aggression. Sam has shown no interest in chasing rabbits or squirrels, when they are around, so it seems likely that he would be okay with a cat. Sam is an all around friendly guy, who will 100% do well with training, consistency, and that all important trip to the vet. , Meet AWESOME Sam!  Guess what---I know sit, stay, paw, down and I come when called!  Some friends took me out for the day and they discovered I know all of these commands and more!  I know how to speak on command and if you ask me to smile I will give you one bark—its’ not really a smile because I don’t show my pretty teeth but it is so cute J  Someone loved me so much that they spent a lot of time training me.   My friend took me to a horse show and I was out and about with horses, people and other dogs. I was even polite to those little dogs that don’t really look like dogs to me J   I was amazing and she was so impressed with me.  She took a photo of me hanging out with a horse. I am good with cats too!   Neither one of my new friends can take their dogs out in public—LOL!  I rode great in the car with my friend and I was so good on a leash at the horse show.  Most dogs can’t do what I did that day.   I am over the top impressive with the STAY command---I stayed with tons of distractions in my friend’s back yard.  There were people walking down the street with dogs, joggers, lawn mowers buzzing around but I STAYED until I was released.  Next they did a series of recalls with me just to make sure that I would come when called.  I came every single time they called me---they tried to trick me and one hid on the side of house so I could not see her but I came when she called.  Every single time I came to them the girls made me do a sit and then a down.  They wanted to make sure that I was SUPER SMART and I am!!!!!        The girls gave me treats for my impressive behavior and they discovered that I take treats gently.  My  mouth is super gentle and my new friend was so impressed---sometimes she calls her dog Jaws because he takes treats so hard which is so impolite.  Then the girls pulled out the dog puzzles and I started to excel playing the Brick game by Nina Ottosson and then came the Bob-a-Lot which I got in a New York minute!   I am good with kids too!  What’s not to like about me---come meet me!  Everyone is special but I am super special because I am trained, housebroken, can go out in public, like people, cats and kids and I am very handsome and loveable!

Admiral was found as a stray along with Kimbra. We are not sure if they lived together but they seem very close and enjoy each other's company. From what we know of her so far, he has a friendly disposition, and he is good with other dogs. He is a big boy and can be head strong. Of course he will need to attend training classes so that he can be the best he can be, training also helps with creating a strong bond with his new family.

Jailyn ended up in a shelter due to her family separating.  She lived with a young child in her previous home.  Jailyn has a lot of energy and would make a great running partner, this will also help burn some of her energy.  Long walks, playtime and training will also do her good.
